The Cities expansion for 7 Wonders adds a more interactive and competitive dimension to your civilization: espionage, mercenaries, diplomacy, debt… and the introduction of new wonders. It intensifies your rivalry with opponents while enriching your development strategies. Compatible with the base game, this expansion is a must-have for players who want to make their games more dynamic.

How to play 7 Wonders with the Cities expansion?
Game Setup
- Make sure you own the 7 Wonders base game.
- Shuffle the new Cities cards ("black" cards) into each Age's decks. These cards add new player interaction actions.
- Also add the two new Wonders and the tokens associated with this expansion to the existing game components.
Gameplay outline
- The gameplay remains faithful to the base game: card drafting, construction, resource trading, etc.
- In each age, in addition to the usual cards, certain Cities cards appear, allowing players to: recruit mercenaries, spy on an opponent, impose a debt, or avoid military conflict through diplomacy.
- These cards slightly alter the rhythm and add a layer of tactics: it's no longer just about building your own civilization, but also about thwarting the progress of others.
Win/Loss Condition
- The victory conditions remain those of the base game: accumulating points via wonders, civilian buildings, scientists, military, etc.
- The expansion does not change the way you win, but it makes certain opposing strategies more dangerous: you must therefore cover both your own development and potential attacks from others.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Integrate Cities cards early into your strategy
Don't consider black cards as secondary bonuses: they can often give you a decisive advantage or significantly slow down an opponent.
-
Watch for debts and negative effects
Some cards force your opponents to pay or suffer penalties. Manage your finances to avoid being vulnerable to these effects or having to suffer the consequences.
-
Use diplomacy if you're running late
If you were unable to compete in construction, diplomacy offers an alternative path to points, or at least a way to cut your losses.
FAQ – All you need to know about 7 Wonders: Cities
Can this expansion be played with only the base game?
Yes, but only if you have the base game box: the expansion is not standalone.
Is this expansion suitable for beginner players?
It is accessible, but requires a good understanding of the base game. The Cities cards add more tactical effects and can make the game more complex.
Is team format possible with this extension?
Yes. The expansion allows up to 8 players (or teams) to play in its adapted version, which makes it even more enjoyable for large groups.
Are the city themes well integrated with the new effects?
Absolutely: mercenaries, spies, debts & diplomacy enter into the logic of ancient cities, strengthening immersion and rivalry between players.
