Avignon: A Clash of Popes is a two-player microgame card game that combines bluffing, influence, strategy, and historical rivalry. Set in a medieval world inspired by the Great Schism of 1378, you play as two rival candidates for the papal seat, seeking to win over key figures from the Church and nobility to gain enough influence. Compact, quick to play, and rich in tactical decisions despite its minimalist format, this game is ideal for intense intellectual duels where every move counts.

How to play Avignon: A Clash of Popes?

Game Setup

  1. Take out the components of the Micro Game: the 12 Character cards, 5 Location cards, player aids, and the rulebook.
  2. Shuffle the Character cards and place five of them face up in the center of the table, usually around the Genoacard (the central point of influence).
  3. Choose which player starts. The two rivals are ready to influence the medieval world!

Gameplay outline

The game unfolds in alternating turns, where each player uses their actions to draw characters to their congregationor repel those of their opponent:

  • Pray: Move a character from the center towards your side of the table to gain influence.
  • Punish: Move a character towards the opponent's area, thus reducing your rival's influence.
  • Excommunicate: Choose a character and place them in the discard pile, then fill the area with a newly drawn card.
  • Supplicate: Activate a special ability indicated on a Character card to gain a unique advantage.

When, as a result of an action, a Character card completely crosses one of the edges of the battlefield (beyond Rome or towards Avignon), it is placed in front of the appropriate player: it then joins their personal congregation. A new card is immediately drawn and placed back in the center to continue the game.

Win/Loss Condition

The goal of Avignonis simple and straightforward:

  • Victory: be the first player to gather three charactersinto your congregation (your row of conquered cards).
The game usually plays in 10 to 20 minutes, perfect for a quick strategic break or for playing multiple duels back-to-back.
  • Master card placement

Every action affects the characters' positions: knowing when to move closer or farther away is essential for controlling the central space and creating opportunities for a quick victory.

  • Harness the characters' powers

Characters aren't just pawns: their unique abilitiescan turn the tide of a fight if used at the right moment.

  • Force the opponent into a mistake

Playing a card in the wrong place or taking a suboptimal action can give your opponent a decisive advantage: always consider what you might be offering your rival.
