Azul is an elegant, abstract strategy tile-placement game designed by Michael Kiesling and published by Next Move / Plan B Games. In this award-winning title (As d’Or Jeu de l’Année 2018), each player takes on the role of a mosaic artisan tasked with decorating the Royal Palace of Evora with the most beautiful azulejos possible. Blending drafting (tile selection), optimal placement, and tactical blocking, Azul offers an accessible yet rich experience, perfect for fans of logic and competitive games.

How do you play Azul?
Game Setup
- Place the factory displaysin the center of the table (5 for 2 players, 7 for 3 players, 9 for 4 players).
- Mix the 100 colored tiles(20 of each color) in the bag and distribute 4 per factory.
- Each player takes a personal board(with pattern lines and a 5×5 wall) and places their marker on score 0.
Gameplay outline
A game ofAzulis played over several rounds, each consisting of two simple phases:
- Tile Selection
Players take turns choosing all tiles of the same color from a factory or the center of the table. They must then place these tiles on one of their pattern lines. Beware: any tile that cannot be placed becomes a penalty. - Placement & Scoring
Once all tiles have been taken, each completed pattern line allows a tile to be moved to the personal wall. Points are immediately scored based on adjacent tiles. Excess tiles result in lost points.
The game ends as soon as a player completes a horizontal row of 5 tiles. End-game bonuses (completed rows, columns, colors) are then tallied to determine the winner.
Win/Loss Condition
The game ends in the round where at least one player completes a horizontal row of 5 tiles on their wall.
Then the final scoringtakes place, with bonusesfor:
- Each completed horizontal row.
- Each completed vertical column.
- Each color entirely present (5 tiles).
The player with the highest total scorewins.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Prioritize lines that are easy to fill out
Quickly filling the small pattern lines at the start of the game ensures a constant flow of points and limits penalties.
-
Subtly block your opponents
Choosing tiles your opponents want can force them to pick up undesirable tiles and fill their floor line.
-
Think in terms of adjacencies
The more your tiles are connected horizontally and vertically, the more points you score when placing them.
