Backstories is an adventure and investigation game where you choose your actions: Search, Discuss, Explore, etc., at a location, and reveal the consequences of your choice using a clever system of punched cards. Several endings are possible: Your choices, your adventure!

In Alone Beneath the Ice, you play as Sophie. Go in search of your brother Jean, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The last news you had came from a refuge at the summit of Mont-Blanc, via a letter Jean sent you. It seems he was looking for a treasure lost since the 1940s: The Amber Room!

It's your turn to play!

How to play Back Stories: Alone In The Ice?

Game Setup

Set up the "Panorama" area with the location, item, or character cards in front of the table.
Each player or team reads the first adventure card and places the perforated "Action" cards in the designated area.
Make the "Objective" and "Discard" cards available and ensure that all materials (128 cards) are ready for use.

Gameplay outline

In your turn, choose an Action card (e.g., Search, Discuss, Use Item) and apply it to a Panorama card by overlapping it. Then flip the cards over to discover the consequence.
Your choices determine how the story unfolds: searching a shelter, questioning a mountaineer, manipulating an artifact, etc. Each action can reveal new cards or unlock different endings.
The game is cooperative, for 1 to 6 players.

Win/Loss Condition

The adventure ends as soon as an "End" card is revealed, either as a result of the choices you have made.

  • Choose your actions carefully to influence the story

Take the time to examine the environment. The action you select (search, talk, use an item...) will have a real narrative impact: this is what makes each game unique.

  • Discuss as a team and share your point of view

Even solo, the mechanics work. But with others, discussing the interpretation of a clue or a choice enhances immersion and tension.

  • Don't try to explore everything at once

Experience recommends letting yourself be carried along: some areas or objects will only be accessible depending on your choices. It is sometimes more interesting to come back after observing rather than trying everything.
