At the far reaches of the Empire, five ambitious barons vie for the throne. In Barony – Royal Edition, a medieval strategy and conquest game, guide your knights, build villages and cities, and extend your influence to become the undisputed ruler of the kingdom.
Each turn, choose from six strategic actions: recruit your troops, move your knights, build your fortresses, or ascend the noble titles. Only rigorous planning and sharp tactical sense will lead you to the rank of King or Queen.
This complete royal edition includes the Sorcery expansion, adding powerful spells to shake up strategy, as well as the exclusive Heroes mini-expansion, which introduces asymmetric powers for each player and renews your games.
A game of great elegance, blending conquest, planning, and clashes in a rich and immersive medieval universe.

How to Play Barony – Royal Deluxe Edition
Game Setup
- Arrange the board, terrain tiles, and villages according to the recommended setup.
- Each player chooses or receives a hero(asymmetric power) and places their knight pawns, resources, and score markers on the table.
- Set up the "Witchcraft" tokens (magic), fortresses, and control markers.
- Determine a play order (e.g., randomly or according to the rules), then give each player a "First Player" marker.
Gameplay outline
- Recruit Knights: strengthen your army to conquer or defend territories.
- Move Your Troops: expand your influence by moving your knights across the board.
- Build Villages: place villages on unoccupied tiles to generate resources.
- Raise Fortresses: transform towns into castles to earn points and strengthen your defensive power.
- Launch Expeditions: send knights to explore or conquer distant areas in search of riches or strategic locations.
- Obtain Titles of Nobility: use your resources to advance in the hierarchy (baron → count → duke, etc.).
After taking your action, you collect resources, adjust your control over territories, then it's the next player's turn.
Win/Loss Condition
Endgame: the game ends when a player becomes a Duke.Scoring: at the end, all players calculate their victory pointsbased on:
- The rank of nobilityachieved (e.g., the title of Duke is worth a lot).
- The number of towns or fortressesthey have built.
- The resources still in their possession.
The player with the highest number of victory pointswins, even if they were not the first to become a Duke.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Wield your hero's asymmetric powers
Every hero has a unique spellcasting ability: quickly identify how to leverage your special power (magic, production, movement, etc.) and structure your actions around it to gain a lasting advantage.
-
Plan your builds efficiently
Building villages and then fortresses costs resources: it is often better to stabilize your economy (with villages) before investing in castles, as fortresses bring in important points, but only if they are well placed.
-
Balance military expansion and territorial diplomacy
Sending too many knights to conquer can weaken your domestic production. Alternate between recruiting and strategic movements depending on the areas to be taken, and try to control high-value tiles to maximize your gains.
FAQ – All about Barony
Is Barony - Royal Deluxe Edition suitable for casual players?
Yes. Although strategic and requiring good planning, the game remains accessible thanks to clear rules, and the asymmetrical powers make each game different, inviting discovery.
How long does a game of Barony last?
A game lasts about 60 minutes, which makes it a sustained strategy game but fast enough to remain dynamic.
What's the difference between the Deluxe Edition and the Standard Edition?
The Royal Deluxe Edition includes larger wooden pieces, additional hero cards, storage boxes, and the "Sorcery" expansion to enrich strategies and extend replayability.
Is the magic expansion ("Sorcery") essential for playing well?
While not strictly necessary, it adds a great deal of strategic depth: the heroes' asymmetrical powers and magic tokens radically alter gameplay and open up alternative paths to victory.
