Blokus is an abstract strategy game that has become a classic in logic games. Easy to learn but surprisingly tactical, it invites players to place pieces of different shapes to conquer as much territory as possible on the board. Each decision influences future possibilities: expanding quickly, blocking opponents, or optimizing space becomes a real strategic challenge. How do you play Blokus?
Game Setup
Place the game board in the center of the table. Each player chooses a color and collects their 21 corresponding pieces, all of different shapes composed of 1 to 5 squares.
The board has 400 squares (20 × 20)and the game can be played by 2 to 4 players.
In the first round, each player must place their first piece in a corner of the board.
Gameplay outline
Les joueurs jouent chacun leur tour en posant une pièce sur le plateau.
Une règle essentielle structure tout le jeu :
- vos pièces doivent se toucher uniquement par les coins,
- elles ne peuvent jamais être collées par les côtés avec vos propres pièces.
En revanche, les pièces des autres joueurs peuvent toucher les vôtres librement, ce qui crée des situations de blocage et de compétition pour l’espace disponible.
Au fil de la partie, les joueurs tentent de s’étendre dans différentes directions tout en empêchant les adversaires d’agrandir leurs zones.
Win/Loss Condition
The game ends when no more players can place a piece.
Each player then counts the remaining squares in their unplaced pieces.
The player with the fewest unplaced squaresgets the highest score and wins the game.

Lay the large pieces first
Large pieces are difficult to place when the board fills up. Using them early allows you to secure maximum space.

Multiplying expansion points
Try to create several open corners around your pieces. The more connection points you have, the more options you keep for subsequent turns.

Extend towards the center of the plateau
The center offers more development opportunities. Reaching it quickly allows for control of more space and limits the opponent's progress.
