Botswana is an elegant and accessible card game that turns every decision into a strategic bet. In this creation by Reiner Knizia, players go on a safari to collect the most valuable animals... except that their value constantly changes throughout the game. Between anticipation, hand management, and reading opponents' intentions, Botswana offers quick games that are surprisingly rich in choices. Behind its simple rules lies a game of tension and opportunism where waiting for the right moment often becomes the key to victory.

How to play Botswana?
Game Setup
- Place the animals in the center of the table to form the common reserve. Each player receives a hand of cards representing different species with varying values.
- The remaining cards will not be used during this round, which creates an element of uncertainty regarding the values actually available during the game.
Gameplay outline
- In turn, a player chooses an Animal card from their hand and plays it in front of them.
- This card determines the current value of that species for the final scoring. Immediately after, the player takes an Animal figurine of their choice from the supply.
- The subtlety of the game comes from the fact that playing a card does not oblige you to take the corresponding animal. You can increase the value of a species while investing elsewhere, or on the contrary, drastically lower the value of a highly coveted animal.
- The game continues until one species has exhausted all its available cards. The last card played for each animal permanently sets its final value for point calculation.
Win/Loss Condition
At the end of the game, each player adds up the points obtained from collected animals according to their final value.
The player who has assembled the most profitable safari wins the game.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Don't just collect the most highly valued animals
A highly profitable species can lose a lot of value if an opponent plays a weaker card at the right time.
-
Keep cards to control the late game
The last few turns are often decisive since the last card played determines the species' final score.
-
Observe the opposing hands
Monitoring already recovered animals helps you anticipate which species your opponents will try to protect.
