The Tower is a strategic expansion for the famous tile-laying game Carcassonne. It introduces a new vertical dimension through the construction of towers that allow players to survey the board... and even capture opposing followers. This expansion adds more interaction and tension between players, while retaining the simple and effective mechanics of the original game. With new tiles and an original capture mechanic, games become more tactical and unpredictable.

How to Play Carcassonne with Extension No. 4 The Tower

Game Setup

  • Mix the 18 new "tower foundation" tiles with the classic base game tiles.
  • Place the "tile tower" within reach of all players to form the draw pile.
  • Depending on the number of players, each player takes a certain number of tiles and places them in front of them.

Gameplay outline

The gameplay remains the same as the base game: each player takes turns drawing a tile (via the tower), placing it according to the classic Carcassonne rules (city, road, field, abbey), then performing an action. With this expansion, after placing their tile, a player can:

  • place one of their meeples on the tile as usual.
  • place a tower level on a tile containing a tower foundation.
  • place a level on an already started tower.
  • place one of their meeples on an open tower, which completes it.

When you place a tower level, you can immediately capture a meeple – yours or an opponent's – placed on a tile orthogonally within range of the tower, according to its height.

Win/Loss Condition

The win condition remains identical to the base game: at the end of the draw pile, players score roads, cities, abbeys, and fields, taking into account captured meeples, but primarily the best management of tiles and turns.

  • Make the most of the tower as soon as a foundation tile appears

As soon as a tile with a tower foundation is drawn, consider placing a tower segment on it rather than simply placing a meeple. The tower changes priorities: controlling the height can offer a decisive advantage.

  • Watch for enemy meeples around your towers

A tower's capture range depends on its height: the higher it is, the greater its range. When a floor is placed, the area around the tower becomes vulnerable. Try to place opposing meeples in danger or avoid placing your own meeples too close to the tower.

  • Integrate the tower into your classic placement plan

Even though the tower is the main asset of this expansion, don't forget that roads, cities, and fields still score points. Don't sacrifice your basic structure for the tower alone: combine them! Strategically placing your meeples on high-potential areas while keeping an eye on the tower is key.

FAQ – All About Carcassonne: The Tower Expansion

Can this expansion be played without owning the Carcassonne base game?

No. This expansion requires the base game to function as it does not include the standard tiles or all the necessary meeples.

How many players can use it?

It is designed to be compatible with up to 6 players, by adjusting the number of tower floors per player.

Does this expansion slow down the game a lot?

It adds an extra strategic dimension, but respects the pace of the original game. Expect a few extra minutes to manage the tower, but nothing excessive.

Can this expansion be combined with other Carcassonne expansions?

Yes, "The Tower" is compatible with many other base game expansions, and you can integrate it into an expansion "mix" as you wish.
