Dive into a new dimension of pastoral and strategic celebration with this expansion to the famous tile-laying game Carcassonne. In "Hills & Sheep", you become a shepherd, exploit pastures, dominate the heights, and transform abbeys into prosperous vineyards. The mechanics are enriched without complicating the game's essence: tile placement, meeple placement, and majorities are still key.

If you already own the base game, this expansion will bring a breath of fresh air and refine your tactical choices.

How to Play Carcassonne with its 9th Expansion: Sheep & Hills

Game Setup

  • Mix the 18 new "Terrain" tiles with those from the base game.
  • Also place the "Sheep" and "Wolf" tokens in the cloth bag.
  • Give each player a shepherd pawn.

(The base game is required to play.)

Gameplay outline

The game flow remains the same as the base game: each player, in turn, draws a tile (via the tower), places it according to the classic Carcassonne rules (city, road, field, abbey), and then performs an action.

When a tile containing a pasture appears, you have the choice between:

  • placing a shepherd instead of a farmer meeple. You then draw a token from the bag: if it's a sheep, place it next to the shepherd; if it's a wolf, the shepherd returns to your supply and all tokens from the pasture return to the bag.
  • If you place your shepherd on an already controlled pasture, you can then, with each expansion of the pasture, either draw another token (at the risk of a wolf) or "bring the flock back to the fold," meaning you score the sheep collected so far.
  • When a "hill" tile is drawn, you must immediately draw a second tile, place it under the first (without looking at it), and then place the combined tile. The meeple placed on this hill tile will have an advantage: in case of a tie in an area (city, road, or pasture), the player with a meeple on a hill alone wins the points.

"Vineyard" tiles also enhance abbeys: each vineyard adjacent to an abbey provides an additional bonus when the abbey is scored.

Win/Loss Condition

The win condition remains the same as in the base game: at the end of the draw pile, roads, cities, abbeys, and fields are scored, taking into account captured meeples, but more importantly, the best management of tiles and towers.

  • Place a shepherd early on a promising pasture

As soon as a tile pre-emerges, consider placing a shepherd rather than a classic meeple. This allows you to take advantage of the sheep/wolf mechanic and prepare for a potentially higher yield than traditional control alone.

  • Weighing the risk of "pushing our luck" or "cutting our losses"

When your shepherd controls a pasture, you can choose between expanding the flock (drawing a token) or bringing the flock home (scoring points). If the bag still contains few sheep tokens, the risk of a wolf increases. Good timing here can swing the game.

  • Don't neglect the abbeys/vineyards and classic gaming

Even with this rich expansion, the core mechanics (cities, roads, pre-peasants) remain essential. Visit the vineyards to boost the abbeys, but don't forget to make your meeples profitable in the safe areas you already control.
