How to play Carcassonne: Bridges, Castles and Bazaars?
Game Setup
This expansion requires the base game Carcassonneto be played.
Before starting the game:
- Mix the new tiles with those from the base game.
- Place the bridges and fortress pawns within reach of the players.
- The classic rules for tile placement and follower placement remain the same.
New elements are simply integrated into the base game and are triggered when they appear on a tile.
Gameplay outline
In turn, a player performs the usual actions:
- Draw a tile.
- Place it respecting connections (roads, cities, fields).
- Optionally place a meeple or special token.
New mechanics modify certain situations:
- Bridgesallow extending a road over a field, even if the tiles don't perfectly match.
- Fortressesare placed in small cities and allow scoring points when neighboring cities are completed.
- Bazaarstrigger an auction phase where players bid points to obtain certain tiles.
These new features bring more interactions and strategic decisions throughout the game.
Win/Loss Condition
As in the base game, the game ends when all tiles have been placed.
Players then score points from cities, roads, monasteries, and fields. The effects of fortresses can also grant additional points.
The player with the highest scorewins the game.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Using bridges to unblock difficult situations
Bridges allow you to extend a road without being entirely dependent on the available tiles. Use them to avoid blocking your constructions or to complete certain roads more easily.
-
Using fortresses to score indirect points
Fortresses can become very profitable if several cities end up around them. Place them in areas with a lot of building activity.
-
Mastering Bazaar Auctions
Bazaars introduce a psychological dimension. Properly evaluate the value of a tile before bidding to avoid losing too many points unnecessarily.
