Catan Duel is the card game adaptation for 2 players of the famous Catan, designed by Klaus Teuber and published by Kosmos. No more hexagonal tiles and large tables: here each player develops their own card principality laid out in front of them, manages their resources and builds settlements and cities to be the first to reach 7 victory points. More strategic and less random than its older brother, Catan Duel offers a tense management and development experience, enriched by 3 progressive thematic modules that bring the game into the history of Catan. An excellent alternative for fans of the series who don't always have a large group at hand.

How to play Catan Duel?
Game Setup
- Sort the 180 cardsby their backs: each player chooses their color (blue or red) and takes their starting cards.
- Align the 2 settlementsand the starting roadface up in front of you — the road must be between the two settlements.
- Arrange your 6 Terrain cardsaround the settlements: 2 at the top and bottom of the road, 2 at the top left and bottom left of the left settlement, 2 at the top right and bottom right of the right settlement.
- Form 4 central pilesof base cards between the two players (roads, settlements, terrain, cities) as well as the Event cards.
- Choose your 3 starting cardsfrom the available cards to hold in your hand.
- Place the 2 dice(Production die and Event die) within reach of both players.
Gameplay outline
Each turn consists of 3 phases:
- Roll the Dice: The Production dieindicates which territories produce resources for both players. Rotate the affected territory cards 90° to the right to indicate the addition of a resource. The Event dietriggers one of 5 effects: Robber, Trade, Celebration, Harvest, or Event card.
- Action Phase: Play as many cards from your hand as you wish, provided you can pay for them by rotating your Territory cards 90° to the left (-1 resource). You can place Upgrade cards(green) on top of your settlements, or Action cards(yellow) for immediate effect. You can also buy road, settlement, or city cards from the central pile.
- Hand Check: At the end of your turn, you can only keep a maximum of 3 cardsin your hand. Discard any excess.
The 3 thematic modules—introduced gradually—add new cards, mechanics, and scoring opportunities: knights, trade fleets, and historical Catan events.
Win/Loss Condition
The first player to reach 7 victory pointswins the game. Points are gained from: settlements (1 VP), cities (2 VP), certain Development cards, the Hegemony token (largest knight army), and the Trade token (strongest trade network).
Our Tips for Winning
-
Build new settlements as quickly as possible
There are only 5 additional settlements availablebeyond your starting settlements. Owning one more than your opponent gives you a victory point lead and two additional terrainsfor resource production. The race for settlements must begin on the first turn.
-
Prioritize Upgrade cards over Action cards in the early game
Green-backed Upgrade cardshave lasting effects that gradually strengthen your principality. Yellow-backed Action cards are one-time events. At the start of the game, invest in Upgrades that increase your resources—such as the Foundry or the Mill—rather than ephemeral bursts of brilliance.
-
Manage your Land card rotations with precision
Each Land card can store up to 3 resource units. If a space already has 3 and your number is rolled, you produce nothing. Anticipate your expenses to regularly clear your land and never waste production.
FAQ – All About Catan Duel
Is Catan Duel really different from classic Catan or just a scaled-down version?
This is a full-fledged adaptation, not a miniature version. Resource management through Terrain card rotation, the absence of trading between players, and building by placing cards create a tactical experience very different from the hexagonal board. Catan veterans will have to unlearn some reflexes.
Do you need to know Catan to enjoy Catan Duel?
No, the game is standalone. The rules are accessible from age 10, and the booklet offers a progressive introductory gamethat introduces mechanics one by one. That said, Catan fans will be pleased to find the familiar universe and resources.
Are the 3 thematic modules difficult to integrate?
No. They're designed to be added one after the other, with each being presented as a self-contained thematic scenario. The box clearly specifies which cards to use at each stage. There's no need to play through everything in your first game.
Are trades between players still possible like in Catan?
No, and that's one of the major differences. In Catan Duel, trades are only made with the central supply, never between the two players. This reinforces the individual strategic dimension and eliminates the social negotiation aspect inherent in the board game.
