Catan Junior is the official adaptation of Catan for children, designed by Klaus Teuber and published by Kosmos. No more settlers and ore: make way for pirates, parrots, and buccaneer lairs! The same ingredients that made Catan a success—collecting resources, building, trading, settling in the best spots—are simplified here and set in a colorful universe accessible from age 6. An ideal introductory game to pass on the passion for board games to the youngest, without adults getting bored.

How to play Catan Junior?
Game Setup
- Place the double-sided game board(one side for 2-3 players, the other for 4 players) in the center of the table.
- Each player chooses their color and places their starting 2 pirate lairson two indicated islands, with a shipconnecting them.
- Distribute the 90 Resource tokens(Gold, Sabers, Wood, Wool, and Pineapple) into piles accessible to all.
- Place the Capt'n Croc pawnon the ghost island and deal the Coco tilesface down.
- The board is ready in under 2 minutes.
Gameplay outline
Each turn consists of 3 simple steps:
- Roll the dice: Each island has a number. If your hideout borders an island with the rolled number, you receive the corresponding resource. All players with hideouts on that island also receive their resources – not just the active player.
- Trade and build: You can trade resourcesfor others via the Central Market (always at a 2:1 ratio), or build a ship(1 Wood + 1 Wool) or a hideout(1 Gold + 1 Sabers + 1 Wood + 1 Wool), provided it is connected to one of your ships.
- Captain Hook: If the dice show the Captain Hook symbol, the active player moves the figure to any island and takes a resource from an opponent with an adjacent hideout. If Captain Hook lands on an island without an enemy hideout, nothing happens.
Coconut tilesare revealed when you build a hideout on certain islands and offer one-time advantages – bonus resources, free trades, or protection from Captain Hook.
Win/Loss Condition
The first player to build their 7 pirate lairswins the game. No point counting: victory is clear, immediate, and unambiguous — perfect for children.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Place your starting lairs on islands with varied resources
Your two starting settlements determine your production for the entire game. Aim for islands with complementary resources— particularly Wood and Sheep to build boats quickly, and Ore for settlements. A balanced start avoids mid-game bottlenecks.
-
Build boats before dens early game
Ships only cost 2 resources (Wood + Wool) compared to 4 for a lair. Build 2 or 3 shipsin a row to quickly position yourself near the best islands, then build your lairs when you are well-placed rather than rushing to the first available spots.
-
Use the Market as soon as you have duplicate resources
The 2:1 Market exchange is still available. Don't let your excess resources accumulate unnecessarily:systematically convert your duplicatesinto more useful resources. This management habit is also an excellent lesson for future Catan players.
FAQ – All about Catan Junior
Is Catan Junior really suitable for a 6-year-old?
Yes, with adult supervision for the first few games. The illustrated board and pictographic materials allow even non-readers to play. The single-die rule considerably simplifies the production phase compared to classic Catan. Allow for 2 or 3 warm-up gamesbefore the game really flows on its own.
Do adults find Catan Junior boring?
Honestly, not much. The game maintains enough tension from placement and the race for the best positionsto keep adults interested. However, very experienced players will naturally tire of the game after about ten plays — which is perfectly normal for an introductory game.
Does Catan Junior really serve as a stepping stone to classic Catan?
Absolutely, that's its main objective. Children who master Catan Junior have intuitively assimilatedthe production, trading, and placement mechanics that are at the heart of Catan. The transition to the adult game comes naturally around 8-10 years old.
Does the reversible board really change the experience depending on the number of players?
Yes. The 2-3 player sideoffers a more compact archipelago where locations are quickly contested. The 4-player side expands the playing area and provides more freedom for expansion. This is a very well-thought-out design detail that adapts the game's tension to the current setup.
