Catan – Seafarers is the essential maritime expansion for Catan, designed by Klaus Teuber and published by Kosmos. It radically transforms the map by adding a vast ocean to explore, unknown islands to colonize, and a fleet of ships to build and move. The basic rules remain intact, but 9 entirely original scenarios enrich them, each with its own objectives, constraints, and maps. An essential purchase for all Catan fans who want to renew the experience without having to relearn everything.

This expansion requires the Catan base game to be played.

How to Play Catan – Seafarers?

Game Setup

  • Choose one of the 9 scenariosprovided in the booklet (each one specifies the materials to use).
  • Assemble the extended boardwith the new Sea tiles, scenario-specific Terrain tiles, and removable port tokens.
  • Place the Pirate pawnsand Robber pawnson their respective starting spaces according to the scenario.
  • Deal each player their 15 boatsin addition to their usual basic game components.
  • Place the special victory tokensface down on the islands to be discovered, according to the scenario instructions.

Gameplay outline

Catan rules apply normally, with these additions:

  • Building ships: a ship costs 1 Wool + 1 Wood. It is placed like a road, but only on Sea hexes. Roads and ships cannot directly extend one another.
  • Moving a ship: once per turn, you can move the last ship of one of your open sea routes to another position—a tactical mobility impossible with land roads.
  • Exploring islands: by reaching an unknown tile with a ship, you flip it face up and immediately collect a resource. If it is habitable, you can place a settlement there for bonus victory points.
  • Managing pirates: when a player rolls a 7, they choose to move the Robberto a land tile or the Pirateto a sea tile. The Pirate blocks adjacent ships and steals a resource.
  • The gold river, available in some scenarios, produces a wild resource of the player's choice—a valuable asset for circumventing shortages.

Win/Loss Condition

The victory threshold varies depending on the scenario (usually between 10 and 15 points). Each scenario specifies additional point sources: first settlements on a new island, completed missions, collected fabrics, etc.

  • Discover scenarios in increasing order of difficulty

The scenarios are progressive:New Shoresintroduces the maritime basics; the following scenarios add extra mechanics. Do not jump directly to Spices for Catan or Pirate Island without having assimilated ship mobility — you will get lost in the intricacies.

  • Exploit the mobility of ships as a tactical advantage

Unlike roads, a ship can be redeployed every turn. If you explore an unproductive island, pivot. This flexibility is one of the expansion's greatest strengths: a poor placement is never permanent as long as your sea route remains open.

  • Don't underestimate the Pirate at sea

The Pirate blocks adjacent ships and steals resources - exactly like the Robber on land, but often overlooked by new players. Consider using it offensivelyto slow down an opponent approaching a coveted island with a timely 7.

FAQ – Everything you need to know about The Seafarers of Catan expansion

Do you need to perfectly master Catan before playing with Seafarers?

Yes. Seafarers is not recommended for your first games of Catan. You should have a good grasp of resource management, building, and trading before adding ships, pirates, and scenarios. Plan for 3 to 5 games of the base gamebefore diving in.

Do the 9 scenarios really have very different experiences?

Yes, each has its own identity.New Shoresis a pure exploration game.Spices for Catanadds delivery missions.Pirate Harborsintroduces a semi-automatic adversary. This variety is precisely what gives Seafarers excellent replayability.

Do boats count for the longest road?

Yes. Ferries are added to land routes to calculate the longest route, provided the segments are continuous. A mixed chain of roads + ferries forms a single coherent whole.

Can Sailors be combined with other expansions like Cities and Knights?

Yes, both expansions are officially compatible. Combining them creates a richer and longer experience — about 2 hours of gameplay. Make sure you have a clear table: the board expands significantly.
