How to play Catan?

Game Setup

  • Essential prerequisite:You must own the Catan base gameto play this expansion.
  • Set up the base board by placing the tiles as indicated in the booklet, then add the sea tiles and terrain specific to the expansion.
  • Mix the new elements: exploration tiles, pirate lairs, mission tracks, gold pieces, fish shoals, spice bags, and figures.
  • Define the chosen scenario (there are several): you will sometimes start with a simple map, sometimes in pirate-infested waters.

Gameplay outline

  • The game retains the core mechanics of Catan(production, trading, and building), but adds navigation: your ships can move freely on the sea board to discover new hexes and bring back rare resources.
  • Exploration:when your ship reaches an unknown territory, the tile is revealed, and you can earn bonus resources if it produces.
  • Fighting Pirates:some tiles house pirate lairs that you can confront to earn gold or victory points.
  • New Buildings:instead of classic cities, you can build port coloniesthat produce based on maritime resources.
  • Thematic Missions:some scenarios introduce missions to complete (exploration, combat, trade) which significantly enrich the game dynamics.

Win/Loss Condition

  • Primary Objective:Each scenario indicates a particular objective (victory points, mission completion, territory discovery) to achieve in order to win the game.
