2 to 6 players 30 min 8 years and up

Célestia is a risk-taking and bluffing game for 2 to 6 players, designed by Aaron Weissblum and illustrated by Gaétan Noir. Aboard a self-assembling 3D airship, players fly over the dreamlike cities of Célestia in search of ever more precious treasures. At each stage, a captain faces the perils of the journey while the other passengers decide: stay to secure a treasure, or continue towards even more fabulous riches at the risk of losing everything? Award-winning since its release in 2015, Célestia is now an undisputed classic family game.

How to play Celestia?

Game Setup

  • Assemble the 3D aircraftin the center of the table — it only takes a few minutes and the result is spectacular.
  • Arrange the 9 citiesin a circle with their treasure pilesface down, from the least valuable (city 1) to the most fabulous (city 9).
  • Shuffle the Equipment cardsand deal 4 to each player. Place the Mishap cards in a separate draw pile.
  • Place the aircraft on the first cityand designate the first captain.

Gameplay outline

Each round consists of 3 phases:

  • Decision Phase: The captain reveals the 2 Peril cardsfor the journey to the next city. These indicate the types of equipment needed. Each passenger then decides in secret: stay in the current city(take a treasure immediately) or continue the journey(place their pawn in the airship). Once decided, there's no turning back.
  • Navigation Phase: The captain reveals their Equipment cards. If they can cover all Perils, the airship takes off and reaches the next city. Passengers who remained on board reach their destination and can take a treasure or try to continue further. If they cannot cover the Perils, the airship crashes: all passengers still on board return to the ground empty-handed and the captain discards their cards without gain.
  • Recovery Phase: Players who left the airship draw a treasure from the city where they stopped. The captain passes to the next player and a new round begins from the reached city — or from city 1 if the airship crashed.

Special cardsoffer tactical advantages: the Sandbagallows you to leave the airship mid-flight, the Telescopeallows you to spy on the captain's cards, and the Gogglesallow you to see upcoming Perils in advance.

Win/Loss Condition

The first player to accumulate 50 treasure pointswins the game. The further away the city, the more points its treasures are worth—but the higher the risk of crashing along the way.

  • Assess the captain's equipment before deciding

You can't see their cards, but you can observe their hesitations. A captain who thinks long and hard before rolling the dice, or who seems uncomfortable, is often a sign that they are low on equipment. Trust your read of other players.

  • Don't always aim for the most distant cities

The treasures of cities 7, 8, and 9 are tempting, but crashes are frequent at high altitudes. A steady strategy around cities 4-6yields solid points without excessive risk. It's better to accumulate reliable intermediate treasures than to come up empty-handed three times in a row.

  • Keep your best cards to be captain

As a passenger, you never use equipment.Keep your rare Peril cards(Storm, Cannons, Ghosts) for your captain's turn and fly the airship as far as possible—even if you're the only one on board.

FAQ – All you need to know about Célestia

Is Célestia suitable for children under 8 years old?

The game is recommended for ages 8 and up, but children aged 6-7 accompanied by an adult will also thoroughly enjoy it. The decision-making mechanic — stay or leave — is intuitive, and Gaétan Noir's enchanting illustrationsimmediately captivate younger players.

Is the 3D aircraft fragile?

It's made of thick, well-designed cardboard. Assembly takes about 5 minutes the first time and the structure is sturdy enoughfor dozens of games. It's a real table element that contributes to the game's atmosphere — some players assemble it permanently to avoid redoing it every game.

Is there too much randomness in Célestia?

Yes and no. The Mishaps introduce an undeniable element of randomness, but reading other players, managing your hand of cards, and choosing the right moment to play themoffer enough control for tactical decisions to outweigh pure luck. It is precisely this balance that makes it a great classic.

What extensions are available?

Two expansions enrich the experience:Celestia Extraadds new Equipment cards, new Events, and a Challenge variant.Celestia a Little Cardis a standalone and portable card game derived from Celestia, playable in 15 minutes.
