Chronicles of Avel – New Adventures is the major official expansion for the cooperative family exploration game, designed by Przemek Wojtkowiak and published by Rebel. The Beast of the Black Moon has been vanquished — but the gods of the three evil moons have seized this moment of weakness to launch their own offensive against the realm. New enemies, 3 narrative scenarios playable as a campaign or separately, and 4 independent modules that can be freely combined make New Adventures a generous expansion that multiplies configurations and boosts replayability well beyond the base game.

How to Play Chronicles of Avel – New Adventures?
Game Setup
- The expansion requires the Chronicles of Avel base gameto play.
- Choose your setup: play one of the 3 thematic scenarios, activate one or more of the 4 modules, or combine both for a custom experience.
- Integrate the new hexagonal location tiles, new equipment tokens, and new monster tokensaccording to the instructions of the chosen scenario or module.
- If you are playing a campaign, the results of the previous scenario influence the setup of the next one—prepare your campaign sheet accordingly.
- The rest of the setup follows the usual rules of the base game.
Gameplay outline
The 3 Thematic Scenarios
- Defy the Amphyoses: the servants of the three evil moons attempt to steal the precious Moon Shards. Stop them before they flee the kingdom.
- Protect the Chariot: escort a chariot carrying Moon Shards across the plateau to the wizard's workshop. Monsters try to intercept your convoy every turn.
- Charge the Lunar Machines: activate and recharge the magical machines scattered across the board to create a protective shield around Avel — before the evil forces prevent you.
The three scenarios can be played separately, in any order, or linked in a campaignfor a continuous narrative experience with progression between games.
The 4 Universal Modules
Modules are independent of scenarios and can be added to any game, including a standard base game:
- The Moon Monster: replaces the original Beast with a 3-headedcreature, each with its own abilities and resistances. A radically different final confrontation.
- Oberon: the powerful elf lord joins your side and provides you with unique magic itemswith powerful effects to aid you in your quest.
- Titania: the mystical elf queen and her magic spiritsprovide valuable support to the group, facilitating certain critical actions at the right time.
- Cruel Hunters: servants of the three moons hunt and capture magic spirits on the board. Free them before it's too late.
Win/Loss Condition
They vary according to the scenario played, but respect the cooperative logic of the base game:the whole group succeeds or fails together. Each scenario defines its own failure and victory conditions — read them carefully before starting, as they guide the entire collective strategy.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Start with the scenarios before adding modules
The 3 scenarios already introduce new mechanics. If you add a module in the very first game with the expansion, the cognitive loadcan become significant. First, discover the scenarios on their own, then layer on the modules once the group is comfortable.
-
In campaigning, optimize your choices between scenarios
The campaign offers a narrative link between the three scenarios, but also tactical progression. After each scenario, take the time to re-read the transition rules: certain bonuses or penalties from the previous scenario can significantly alter the next setup.
-
Combine Oberon and Titania for maximum support
The Oberon and Titania modules are fully compatible with each other. Played together, they offer a particularly generous range of aids and items— ideal for groups who wish to increase scenario difficulty while retaining a solid support kit.
FAQ – All you need to know about Chronicles of Avel: New Adventures
Can the modules be used without playing the scenarios?
Yes, totally. The 4 modules are universal: they can be superimposed on any part, whether it comes from an expansion scenario or the standard mode of the base game. This is precisely their strength—they enrich without replacing.
Is the expansion difficult to get into for someone familiar with the base game?
No. The new mechanics naturally fit into the existing framework. The new tiles, monsters, and equipmentwork exactly like their equivalents in the base game, simply with new effects. No fundamental rules change.
Is the 3-Headed Moon Monster much harder than the original Beast?
Yes, significantly. Each head has its own abilities and must be handled differently, forcing the group todivide roles more preciselyduring the final assault. This is an excellent challenge for groups who found the original Beast too predictable.
Is the 3-scenario campaign long?
Count on 3 sessions of 60 to 90 minuteseach for a complete 3-4 player campaign. Progression between scenarios is easy to manage—a campaign sheet is sufficient—and each session can end cleanly at the end of a scenario.
