Clank! is a deck-building board game and push-your-luck game for 2 to 4 players, designed by Paul Dennen and published by Renegade Game Studios. In the underground of the Dragon's tower, fabulous artifacts await to be stolen — but every false step makes a noise, and the dragon has a keen ear. Each player builds their deck during the game, moves through the dungeon on an actual board, collects treasures, and tries to get out alive before the dragon's wrath overwhelms them. A game with a rare alchemy between deck-building and dungeon crawler, accessible and thrilling, Golden Geek Award for best card game upon its release.

How to play Clank!?
Game Setup
- Set up the double-sided game board(two difficulty levels) representing the Dragon's dungeons.
- Each player receives an identical starting deckof 10 cards: 6 Blunders (useless cards to clear out), 2 Sword-Doers (1 Sword each), and 2 Basic Skills.
- Form the riverin the center: 6 cards drawn face-up from the common deck of over 100 Adventure cards. These are the cards available for purchase by all players.
- Place the 24 Dragon cubesinto the cloth bagwith 24 neutral black cubes—their proportion will evolve throughout the game.
- Each player places their Adventurer pawnon the starting space. The Dragon bag remains closed until the first attack.
Gameplay outline
In your turn, you play all 5 of your cards in the order of your choice. They generate three types of resources:
- Skill: allows you to buy cardsfrom the river and add them to your discard pile to enrich your deck.
- Sword: allows you to fight the monsterson the board. Some monsters are unavoidable on the paths to the deepest artifacts.
- Movement: allows you to movefrom room to room on the board. Each corridor indicates its cost in Movement points.
The central mechanic of Clank! (noise)is the heart of the game: many cards generate noise cubesof your color that go into a waiting area. When a card with a Dragon symbolappears in the river, you draw as many cubes from the Dragon bag as the symbol indicates — each cube of your color inflicts damage on you. The further the game progresses, the more your cubes replace the neutral cubes in the bag, and the more dangerous each dragon attack becomes.
The artifactsare distributed on the board — the most valuable ones are in the depths. Once you have your artifact in hand, you must return to the starting areato secure your treasures. It's impossible to score if you remain in the dungeon.
Win/Loss Condition
The end of the game is triggered as soon as a player safely exitsthe dungeon. Other players then have extra turns to try to get out as well. A player whose hit points drop to zerois unconscious: if they are in the dungeon, they are lost and do not score their points. If they have already reached the starting area, they survive but receive a penalty.
The winner is the one with the most victory points: value of artifacts and treasures, value of purchased point cards, and bonuses from certain tokens collected in the dungeon.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Manage Your Faux Pas to Limit Unintended Noise
The False Step cardsin your starting deck generate Clank! without providing you with any useful resources. The longer they remain in your deck, the more unintentional noise you make with each cycle. Quickly identify cards that allow you to remove cards from your deckto get rid of them first.
-
Go down deep, but plan your ascent
Deep artifacts are worth many more points, but the ascent is long and costly in Boots. Before going through each door, estimate how many turns separate you from the exitand check that your health points can withstand it. Many games are lost because a player misjudged the return journey.
-
Watch out for Dragon's Rage and the cubes in the Clank zone
When multiple players make a lot of noise simultaneously, the Clank! zone fills up quickly. A Dragon Attack with many cubes of your color can kill you in one hit. Make as little noise as possiblebefore you have your Artifact—once the rage is unleashed, it's too late to be discreet.
FAQ – All you need to know about Clank!
Is Clank! accessible to players who are not used to deckbuilding?
This is precisely one of its great strengths. You play all your cards every turn — no complex hand management — and the board provides a concrete visual anchor that aids understanding. It's often the best gateway to deckbuildingfor players unfamiliar with the genre.
Are Faux Pas cards really that penalizing?
Yes, and that's intentional. They don't generate any resources but produce1 Clank! cubeeach—pure, free noise. Having them still in your deck at the end of the game is one of the main indicators of a poorly calibrated strategy. By getting rid of them early, you not only become quieter but also more efficient with each turn.
Is the element of luck with the Dragon Sack too significant?
It is real and undeniable. The Dragon sack creates a constant tension that is the core of the experience. For players who want more control, the harder side of the boardand some expansions offer more strategic configurations. Clank! is an adventure game with adrenaline—not a wargame.
How long does a game last?
Allow 45 to 75 minutesdepending on the number of players and their experience. The first few games will take closer to 90 minutes as you get familiar with the cards. Experienced groups can easily play in under an hour.
