Cluedo is the world's best-selling deduction and investigation game, conceived by Anthony Pratt in Birmingham in 1943 and marketed since 1949. Dr. Black has been murdered in his Tudor mansion during a reception — it's up to you to discover who killed him, in which room, and with what weapon. Six suspects, nine rooms, six weapons, and only one culprit: the solution is locked in a confidential envelope that no one can open before the final accusation. A timeless classic, recommended for ages 8 and up, and regularly re-released for over 75 years.

How do you play Cluedo?
Game Setup
- Place the Tudor Mansion game boardin the center of the table.
- Separately shuffle the three decks of cards: Suspects(6 cards), Weapons(6 cards), and Rooms(9 cards). Draw one card from each deck face down and slide them into the confidential envelope—these 3 cards are the solution to the crime, unknown to everyone.
- Shuffle the remaining 18 cardsand deal them equally among the players. Each player takes a detective notebook sheetand immediately checks off the cards they have in their hand—they cannot be in the envelope.
- Each player chooses a suspect pawnfrom the 6 available and places it on their starting space. The 6 weapons are distributed among the different rooms of the mansion.
- Roll the dice to determine the first player.
Gameplay outline
Your turn consists of two steps:
- Movement: Roll both dice and move your pawn that many spaces toward the room of your choice — vertically, horizontally, never diagonally. Once you enter a room, you cannot move any further this turn. Four secret passagesallow you to move directly between opposite rooms without rolling the dice.
- Suggestion: If you are in a room, you can make a suggestionby naming a suspect, a weapon, and the room you are in. The named pawns are immediately moved to that room. You then question the player to your left: if they have one of the cards mentioned, they must show you onediscreetly, without others seeing it. If they have none, the next player is questioned, and so on. Note the result on your notebook. Allowed tip: You can name a suspect or a weapon for which you yourself hold the card to mislead others.
Win/Loss Condition
When you think you have identified the 3 secret cards, make your accusation– secretly write it down and check the contents of the confidential envelope. If you are correct, reveal the cards to everyone: you have solved the crime. If you are wrong, put the cards back in the envelope without showing them – you can no longer move or question, but you continue to answer other players' hypotheses. Each player has only one accusation– use it wisely.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Systematically and methodically check your notebook
The clue sheet is your most powerful tool. Check off the cards in your hand at the start and note down every piece of information obtainedduring your hypotheses — including what your opponents show to others. Observing that a player shows a card to their neighbor is a clue in itself.
-
Formulate your hypotheses in strategically chosen rooms
-
Use assumptions to trick your opponents
It is perfectly legal to mention a card you already hold. If you have the Candlestick in your hand, mentioning it as a possibility can make others believe you are still looking for that weapon. This misinformation can distract your opponents from the real trail.
FAQ – All about Cluedo
Can a player lie when shown a card?
No, it is forbidden. If a player has one or more of the cards mentioned in a hypothesis, they must show oneto the investigator—they can choose which one, but they cannot lie or refuse. This obligation is the foundation of the entire game mechanic.
Can we charge at any time, or only in a room?
The accusation can be made at any timeduring your turn — unlike the suggestion, which requires you to be in the room you are naming. This freedom makes the accusation accessible from anywhere on the board
What happens if all but one player made a bad accusation?
The last player remaining is automatically declared the winner — they do not need to make an accusation. This can theoretically happen, but it's quite a rare endgame in practice.
How many editions and versions are there?
Dozens. Since 1949, Cluedo has been released in thematic versions (Harry Potter, The Simpsons, Game of Thrones...), in Super Cluedo with more suspects and weapons, in digital versions, and in numerous re-editions. The classic version remains the benchmark, but modern versions often add special cards and unique character powers.
