How to play Decrypto?

Game Setup

Before starting the game:

  • Players divide into 2 teams.
  • Each team receives 4 secret words, visible only to its members.
  • A screen is used to hide these words from opponents.
  • The tokens (interception and misunderstanding) are placed in the center.

Each team knows its own words… but must guess those of the other team.

Gameplay outline

A game unfolds over several rounds:

  1. One player from each team becomes the encrypter.
  2. They draw a secret code (e.g., 2-4-1).
  3. They give 3 cluesrelated to the corresponding words to help their team guess this code.
  4. Their team tries to find the correct order of the words.
  5. Meanwhile, the opposing team listens and tries to intercept the code.

The entire challenge lies here:

  • Giving clues clear enough for your team
  • But vague enough not to help the opponents

As the rounds progress, teams accumulate information and become increasingly dangerous.

Win/Loss Condition

Two ways to win:

  • Intercept2 enemy codes→ immediate victory
  • Or avoid accumulating2 errors (misunderstandings)→ otherwise defeat

The game can also end after several rounds if neither condition is met, with a victory based on score.

  • Striking the right balance between precision and discretion

    This is the absolute key to Decrypto. If your clues are too obvious, your opponents will quickly understand your logic. Conversely, if they are too vague, your own team might make a mistake. Always aim for a happy medium, with clues that are clear to your teammates but difficult for others to exploit in the long run.

  • Vary your brainstorming

    Avoid always using the same type of clue (synonyms, categories, cultural references). By varying your approaches, you make your code harder for the opposing team to decipher. This diversity is essential to avoid gradually revealing your secret words.

  • Memorize adverse cues

    Every clue given by the opposing team is valuable information. Take note of them and try to spot patterns or repetitions. The further the game progresses, the better you'll be able to guess their keywords... and thus intercept their codes.
