How do I play Deep River?

Game Setup

Setup is quick, yet strategic:

  • The board consists of modular river tiles, offering a different configuration each game.
  • Each player chooses a faction (salmon or eels) and places their pawns in their zone.
  • The bear is positioned in the center, ready to be manipulated by the players.
  • Action tiles are placed within reach to determine movement.

This variable configuration guarantees high replayability from the very first games.

Gameplay outline

In turn, a player:

  1. Chooses an available action tile.
  2. Moves one or more fish according to the indicated value.
  3. Applies the effect of the tile they land on (movement, capture, bonus, etc.).

The main mechanics are based on:

  • Strategic movement of your fish
  • Activating effects to disrupt your opponent
  • Manipulating the bear, the true central element of the game

The goal is twofold: to advance towards the opponent's camp while controlling the bear's position to push it to the right side.

Each turn requires real thought, as the available actions also influence your opponent's possibilities in the next turn.

Win/Loss Condition

Two main conditions can end the game:

  • The bear reaches a player's camp → that player immediately loses
  • Certain progression conditions are met → the player in the best position wins

In all cases, victory goes to the player who best anticipated movements and controlled the situation.
