How to play Dixit?
Game Setup
Setup is quick and user-friendly:
- Each player receives 6 illustrated cards.
- A score board is placed in the center with the player pawns.
- A draw pile of cards is created.
The game is based on a set of 84 unique, text-free cards, encouraging free interpretation.
Gameplay outline
Each round follows a simple but ingenious principle:
- One player becomes the storyteller.
- They choose a card from their hand and announce a word, phrase, or idea inspired by the image.
- The other players select a card from their hand that matches this clue.
- All cards are shuffled and revealed.
- Players must find the storyteller's card.
The subtle balance of the game:
- A clue that is too obvious→ everyone finds it
- A clue that is too vague→ no one finds it
- You need to aim for the middle ground to score points
Win/Loss Condition
The game ends when a player reaches a certain number of points.
- Players score points by guessing correctly
- The storyteller scores points if their clue is well-balanced
The player with the most pointswins the game.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Finding the right level of ambiguity
This is the key to Dixit. Your clue must be understood by some players… but not all. Try to aim for a small group rather than everyone, in order to maximize your points.
-
Tailor your clues to your group
Each group of players has its own references: cultural, humorous, or personal. Use these elements to create clues that are more relevant and harder for some to decipher.
-
Observe other players' choices
Cards played often give clues as to how others think. With a little attention, you'll be able to anticipate their choices and better guess the Storyteller's card.
FAQ – Everything you need to know about Dixit
Why is Dixit a unique word association game?
Dixit stands out for its use of images rather than words. Each illustration can be interpreted in multiple ways, allowing for great creative freedom and making every game different.
Is the game accessible to everyone?
Yes, that is one of its greatest strengths. The rules are simple and do not require any specific knowledge. Children and adults can play together, each bringing their own sensibilities.
Is creativity essential for success?
A minimum of imagination helps, but it's mostly about understanding the other players. A good Dixit player is one who knows how to adapt their clues to the group rather than simply being creative.
Are the parties always different?
Yes, thanks to the many cards and the diversity of possible interpretations. Even with the same cards, the associations of ideas change according to the players and the context.
