A Fake Artist Goes to New York is a creative and social party game where players collaborate to draw a single collective image around a secret theme... but one of them doesn't know the theme! This original party game combines chain drawing, bluffing, and deduction, making it a must-have for family or friends' game nights. Easy to learn, hilarious to play, and always full of twists, it's suitable for players aged 8 and up for games lasting 15 to 30 minutes.

How to play A Fake Artist Goes to New York?
Game Setup
- Choose a Question Masterfor the first round: they will read out the secret theme.
- The Question Master notes a specific wordrelated to a category known to all(e.g. "animals" or "green object"), then writes this word on all but one of the cards.
- The last card simply has an "X": the fake artist, who doesn't see the word. All other cards are dealt face downto the players.
- Give each player a personal boardand a wipeable marker. Place the shared drawing sheetin the center.
Gameplay outline
- The game takes place in two drawing rounds:
- Each player, in turn, adds a continuous lineto the collective work. This can be a simple segment, a curve, a detail, etc., depending on what they believe the theme is.
- True artists subtly try to indicate that they know the theme without revealing it too clearly to the fake artist. Awkwardness or abstraction is often part of the fun.
- Once each player has drawn twice, everyone discusses and together guesses who the fake artist is.
Win/Loss Condition
- Vote on the identity of the fake artist:
If the players correctly identify the fake artist, the“real artists” win.
If the fake artist is incorrectly identified, they can stillwin at the end of the game... - The fake artist must guess the secret word:
If the fake artist successfully guesses the secret theme at the end, they win with the Question Master.
If they guess incorrectly, thenthe artists win, even if they were not correctly voted out.
Thus, the outcome depends on both deductionandthe fake artist's ability to guess the word from the collective, messy artwork.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Draw with subtlety
True artists must draw just enough to show they know the subject, without making the drawing too obviousso as not to help the fake artist.
-
Analyze the traits of others
Observe the consistency of the lines: those that are too inconsistent or overly generic may reveal a fake artist.
-
Bluff if you're the imposter
Don't be too random: try to incorporate plausible elements of the theme without revealing too much, to stay in the running until the end.
