Frosted Blooms is a tile-laying and optimization game for 1 to 4 players, by Bruno Cathala and Ludovic Maublanc, the creators of Cyclades and Mr. Jack. At the dawn of a still frosty Dutch spring, each player creates their own tulip garden by selecting tiles and Landscape cards, building windmills and barns, and pursuing common objectives. Accessible from 8 years old, fluid in 30 minutes, but formidably strategic: the authors' signature is there, with its constant choices and heartbreaking compromises.
How to Play Frosted Blooms
Game Setup
- Placez le plateau central au milieu de la table et disposez les 44 tuiles Paysage recto verso dans le sac en tissu pour les piocher aléatoirement.
- Installez les 4 tuiles de départ face visible sur le plateau, formant la zone de sélection initiale.
- Distribuez à chaque joueur une aide de jeu et ses 10 pièces de départ, ainsi que son marqueur de score.
- Posez le jeton Fleur sur la première tuile du plateau commun.
- Distribuez 4 cartes Paysage en main à chaque joueur. Installez les 21 tuiles Objectif face visible.
- Désignez le premier joueur : le setup prend moins de 3 minutes.
Gameplay outline
The game is played over 10 rounds. On your turn, you perform 5 successive actions:
- Select a tile: move the Flower tokenclockwise to the desired tile. For each unchosen tile along the way, you pay 1 coin. Nearby tiles are therefore free, while coveted tiles come at a cost.
- Place the tilein your personal garden, adjacent and orthogonally aligned with an already placed tile.
- Play a Landscape cardfrom your hand: it determines your immediate pointsbased on groups of adjacent elements—different colored flowers or water areas—formed around the tile you just placed.
- Place an Improvementif you have created an entirely enclosed space in your garden: install a Worker, a Barn, or a Millthere for end-game bonuses.
- Claim an Objectiveif you meet its conditions—but each type of objective can only be accessed onceper game, creating a real race for opportunities.
Win/Loss Condition
After 10 rounds, the final count is made:
- Points accumulated during the game via Landscape cards.
- End-of-game bonuses from Improvements(Workers, Barns, Mills).
- Points from completed Objectives.
- The player with the highest scorewins the glory of the Netherlands.
Our Tips for Winning

Never pay unnecessarily for a distant tile
The cost in coinsto reach a distant tile may seem negligible, but it quickly adds up over 10 rounds. Learn to identify "free" or cheap tiles that fit well into your plan, rather than consistently chasing the ideal tile.

Create enclosed spaces as early as possible
Les Améliorations (Granges et Moulins surtout) sont les principales sources de points de fin de partie. Anticipez dès le début la forme de votre jardin pour créer des espaces naturellement clôturables en 3 ou 4 tuiles. Un Moulin bien placé peut valoir à lui seul la victoire.

Adapt your hand of cards to your garden, not the other way around
Each Landscape card plays on groups of adjacent elements. Before placing your tile, first look at which cards you have in hand and position the tile where it will maximize their effect. This card reading + placement is the core of the strategy.

Is Frosted Blooms similar to a game like Patchwork?
The tile selection mechanic with the moving Flower tokenis directly inspired by Patchwork. But Frosted Blooms adds a card activation system, Upgrades to build, and Objectives to claim, making it significantly more strategic and richer in the long run.
Is the single player mode satisfying?
Yes. The 15 Master Gardener cardsprovide a well-calibrated solo opponent that simulates realistic pressure without being frustrating. It's an excellent mode for training and discovering game synergies before playing against real opponents.
Does the game board evolve during the game?
Yes, and that's a strong asset. Each tile has two different configurations, which means you also choose which side to facein your garden when placing it. This extra choice adds even more depth to the personal puzzle.
Is the 30-minute duration realistic?
Absolutely, even with 4 players. Turns are quick because actions are clear and your hand of cards is small. The first few games might take 40-45 minutes as you get to grips with the Upgrades, but the pace naturally picks up from the second game onwards.
