Immerse yourself in the flamboyant atmosphere of the 1920s with Gatsby. You play as one of two ambitious guests, Dorothy Williams or James Miller, determined to climb into Long Island's most influential circles. Through a two-player game blending strategic placement, majority, and a race for influence, each game becomes a refined duel where deceptive appearances and social rivalries play out on an elegant board.

How to play Gatsby?
Game Setup
Set up the central board showing the three key locations: the Cabaret, the Financial Center, and the Racetrack. Each player chooses their character, Dorothy or James, and takes the influence tokens of their color, as well as the other elements: the action marker, the "Special Action" tiles, and the "Character" tiles. Place the Character tiles in each zone according to the rules. The starting player is determined (for example, by rolling the Action token
Gameplay outline
In turn, you place your action marker on one of the four action spaces, provided it's not the one chosen just before by your opponent. Then, you activate the corresponding action.
These actions notably allow you to place two influence tokens in one or two of the zones (Cabaret, Financial Center, Racecourse).
Cabaret: Place your tokens to connect two opposite sides of the board or to occupy all four "star" icons simultaneously.
Financial Center: Advance on the ascension track by placing your tokens. Reaching or surpassing your opponent on certain tiers allows you to claim a Character tile.
Racecourse: Commit your tokens to the race tracks. Once a track is filled, the player with the most tokens on it wins the Character tile at the end of the track.
Bonus spaces are scattered throughout the three zones: they can be worth a token exchange, a special Action tile, or force your opponent to perform a specific action.
Win/Loss Condition
The game ends immediately if:
A player gets three characters from the same family, or a player gets one character from each of the five families.
If neither of these conditions is met when all character tiles in a location are claimed, count the stars on the Character tiles and Special Action tiles: the player with the most stars wins.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Prioritize the Cabaret to establish a first base
The Cabaret is often where a well-placed token can quickly block an opponent or force them to react. By aiming for a line or occupying all four star icons from the opening, you gain a significant advantage.
-
Alternate your zones to surprise your opponent
Don't get stuck in just one of the three zones. Your opponent could anticipate your strategy; by varying between Cabaret, Financial Center, and Racetrack, you create uncertainty and exploit hidden bonuses.
-
Use the bonus squares to turn the game around
Bonus squares are small accelerators of gain: token exchange, special Action tile, forcing an opponent's move... By paying attention to them, you can turn an average position into an advantage. Do not consider them as accessories.
All about Gatsby
What's the game's thematic atmosphere?
The universe transports us to the luxury and splendor of the Roaring Twenties in Long Island. To the sound of jazz, dressed in a suit or evening gown, you compete to attract the attention of the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby.
Is the game suitable for experienced players?
Yes: although the rules are accessible, the depth of the combinations (different zones, bonus management, two-player duel) will also appeal to experienced players looking for a quick yet rich game.
What is the role of chance in the game?
Randomness is very limited. The game relies essentially on action planning and influence management. The authors present the game as "leaving very little room for chance".
Can one play multiple games in a row without getting tired of it?
Yes. Thanks to the multiple locations, randomly drawn Character tiles, and variable bonuses, each game offers a different setup. The game remains dynamic and infinitely replayable.
