Dive into a compact and impactful version of the Gloomhaven universe: Buttons & Bugs offers a solo adventure full of twists, turns, and humor, in which you embody a Lilliputian hero facing giant enemies.
The game retains the tactical and immersive spirit of the saga while offering a fast and accessible format. Ideal for a game in under 30 minutes, it is a must-have for fans of strategic fantasy.

How to Play Gloomhaven – Buttons & Bugs
Game Setup
- Choose one of the 6 available heroes, each with their mini-figure and a double-sided ability deck.
- Set up a scenario: a single board card where enemies, traps, or obstacles are placed according to the instructions.
- Place the Status tokens, the attack modifier chart, and the specific die.
Gameplay outline
- Each turn, select two cards from your hand. Each card has a "top action" half and a "bottom action" half.
- Determine initiative based on your cards and those of the enemies. Resolve actions in initiative order: movement, attack, effects...
- Enemies are managed via AI/quick activation cards and act according to a simplified pattern adapted to the solo format.
- At the end of the turn, you can choose to take a short or long rest depending on your remaining hand. Poor management can lead to your cards running out, and thus to the failure of the scenario.
Win/Loss Condition
- Victory: achieve the scenario objective (often eliminate all enemies or survive until a given point).
- Defeat: if your hero has no more cards to play or if a scenario-specific failure criterion is met. The quick format demands efficiency and good planning.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Prioritize your most versatile cards
Right from the start, choose cards that offer movement, defense, and attack. In a quick, solo format like Buttons & Beasts, flexibility allows you to avoid being blocked by a choice that isn't suited to the situation.
-
Intelligently using rest timings
Poor rest can cost you the game: prioritize a long rest at the right time if you anticipate a major enemy assault, rather than exhausting your hand with suboptimal actions.
-
Keep an eye on your hand and the "last lap"
In a short campaign, every scenario counts. If you're nearing the end of your hand, adapt your strategy to aim for victory now rather than waiting for a better opportunity that might never come.
