How to play Hanabi?

Game Setup

Place the 8 clue tokens(blue) and the 3 error tokens(red) within everyone's reach.

Shuffle the cards, then deal them: each player receives 5 cardsif 2 to 3 players, 4 cardsif 4 to 5 players. Cards are held face up for other players, but you do not look at your own cards.

Gameplay outline

On their turn, a player must perform one and only one of the following three actions:

Give information: Spend one clue token to tell another player either the color of some cards in their hand, or their value. You must point to all cards concerned.

Discard a card: Choose one of your cards (which you cannot see), discard it, then draw a new card: you regain one clue token.

Play a card: Choose a card from your hand and play it in front of you, attempting to complete a firework (a sequence of 1 to 5 in a color). If it cannot be played, you make a mistake: add one error token.

Win/Loss Condition

Win: if you manage to complete all 5 fireworks (one of each color) before the three error tokens are used.

Loss: if all three error tokens are placed or if the draw pile is exhausted and the last turn is over without successfully completing all the fireworks.

Our Tips for Winning

  • Give clues thoughtfully

    Every clue token is precious: prioritize information that genuinely helps your teammates know when to play rather than just quickly stating "which color." One piece of well-placed, good information is far more useful than several approximate ones.

  • Memorize other players' face-up cards and anticipate

    Since you cannot see your own cards, pay attention to what other players see and indicate. Keeping track of cards already played or discarded helps you better decide what to do: play a card, discard a card, or give a hint.

  • Don't discard lightly

    Although discarding gives you a hint token, it can jeopardize a firework if you discard a rare or essential card. Before acting, consider what your team can still achieve.
