How to play Hanamikoji?

Game Setup

  • Place the 7 "Geisha" cards in the center of the table in a visible row, each with a favor token on it.
  • Shuffle the "Gift/Object" cards (3 cards per Geisha) then remove one card face down and deal 6 cards to each player (for a standard two-player game).
  • Each player takes their 4 action markers and places them in front of them.

Gameplay outline

  • The game is played in rounds. In each round, each player performs exactly four actions (in the order of their choice):
  • Secret: choose a card from your hand, place it face down under the "Secret" action marker.
  • Decide on two cards: choose two cards from your hand and place them face down under the "Discard/Abandon" marker.
  • Offer three cards: choose three cards from your hand, place them face up in front of you; your opponent chooses one for themselves (which goes to the corresponding Geisha), then you distribute the other two.
  • Competition: choose four cards from your hand, form two pairs, and your opponent first chooses which of the pairs you keep or not — you then play the other.
  • Once both players have used their 4 actions, we move to the scoring phase: the cards under "Secret" are revealed and added to the relevant Geishas, then for each Geisha, the number of cards each player has assigned to her is compared. The one who has more cards wins the favor of that Geisha (the token flips to them).

Win/Loss Condition

  • The game ends immediately as soon as a player meets one of the following conditions:
  • They possess the favor of 4 or more Geishas.
  • They have accumulated at least 11 charm points (points inscribed on the Geishas whose favor they possess).
    If no condition is met after a round, the game continues

Our Tips for Winning

  • Prioritize high-charm Geishas

    Geishas are worth between 2 and 5 charm points: aiming for those with high value can quickly lead you to the 11 points needed. But they are also more sought after

  • Use the "Give three cards" action strategically

    When you choose three cards, your opponent will take the best one for themselves.

    Try to offer them a choice where they either take what they want but you remain in a good position, or they leave you with a good option. This "you choose, I get the other" mechanic is central.

  • Manage your remaining cards for subsequent rounds

    Each round is not resolved in a single turn. Remember to keep cards for future rounds, especially through actions that remove or swap cards. Fine-tuning your hand improves your chances.

Is the theme important for gameplay?

The theme of geishas and Hanamikoji Street in Kyoto is elegant and immersive, but the mechanics remain abstract: it's primarily about playing cards and making choices. The theme adds atmosphere but doesn't complicate the learning process.

Can we play in multiple rounds or vary the difficulty?

Yes, each game consists of rounds until one of the players wins. The game is already excellent in its standard version, but you can agree on multiple matches or a cumulative score to extend the experience.

How strong is this game compared to other two-player games?

Hanamikoji stands out for its depth despite its simplicity: minimal components, quick-to-learn rules, but very impactful choices every turn. It is often cited as one of the best 2-player games.

Can you play multiple games in a row without getting bored?

Yes! Rounds are quick and intense, and each game is different thanks to random card distribution and tactical choices. The game remains engaging over time.
