How to play Heroquest First Glimmers?
Game Setup
- Set up the reversible board according to the chosen quest (two sides with different layouts).
- Each player chooses a hero and takes the corresponding miniature (barbarian, dwarf, elf, wizard).
- Prepare the quest book with the day's mission and the dungeon master's screen (Zargon).
- Arrange the dungeon tiles, monster miniatures, furniture, doors, cards (100+), dice (combat + movement), and plastic tokens according to the box contents.
Gameplay outline
- The Dungeon Master (Zargon) places monsters, traps, and furniture according to the quest map.
- Heroes take turns: moving, opening doors, fighting, searching... and interacting with the dungeon's furnishings.
- Combat takes place via combat die rolls, using different dice depending on the actions (attack, defense).
- When a hero explores, they can reveal hidden tiles, find treasures, and trigger events specific to each quest.
- The Dungeon Master manages threats: they use the screen to keep certain information secret, launch monster attacks, or set traps.
Win/Loss Condition
- Heroes win the quest if they achieve the specific objective (e.g., defeat a monster, find an artifact, rescue a prisoner).
- If all heroes are defeated or fail according to the quest conditions, the dungeon master may win.
- Each game lasts between1h30 and 2h, depending on the quest and group size.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Plan cooperation from the very first round
Combine your heroes' skills: a barbarian for tanking, a wizard for spells, an elf for exploration. Good coordination speeds up the adventure.
-
Manage your resources wisely
Don't waste your actions: searching, moving, or fighting are all important decisions, especially in complex dungeons.
-
Use the Dungeon Master's screen wisely
As the Zargon, your placement choices (monsters, traps) can make all the difference. Vary the difficulty based on the group composition to create epic moments.
