How to play Ink It?

Game Setup

  • Place the 300 "Word/Concept" cards, the 4 stamps (shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle), the ink pads (4 colors: red, blue, green, yellow), the pad of paper, and the "score tracker" cards within reach.
  • Determine the player order — the game is for 2 to 8 players, ages 7 and up.

Gameplay outline

  • The game consists of 5 rounds. In each round, one player (or several, depending on the number of players) is designated as the captain. The others draw a "Word" card that they must get others to guess.
  • To get their word guessed, the "drawers" are only allowed a limited number of stamps (ink stamps), representing simple shapes (red circle, blue square, green triangle, yellow rectangle).
  • The number of usable stamps decreases as the rounds progress: from 5 in the first round down to only 1 in the last. This increases the difficulty and cooperative aspect of the game.
  • Once all the drawings are made, the "Word" cards are shuffled (with 2 additional "intruder" cards to make the challenge harder), then the captain tries to match each drawing to a word. If the team has accumulated too many errors (more errors than players), the game ends immediately in defeat.
  • If the team manages to get through all 5 rounds without exceeding the error quota, they win the game — a collective victory!

Win/Loss Condition

  • Collective victory if the team completes 5 innings while keeping the number of errors below the authorized threshold.
  • Immediate defeat if the cumulative number of errors exceeds the number of players at any given time.
  • Communicate with each other

Before stamping, agree on a simple visual vocabulary (e.g., circle = head, square = house, etc.). This consistency makes it easier for the captain to understand — especially when the number of stamps drops to 1.

  • Focus on simplicity and abstraction rather than detail

When stamps are scarce, opt for a minimalist but symbolic design. A well-placed shape or a clever overlay is better than an overcrowded design.

  • Observe other players' styles

Watch how your teammates stamp — this can give you clues to more easily interpret their drawings and guide you in your own choices.

FAQ – Everything you need to know about Ink It

How many players can play?

Ink It is played by 2 to 8 players.

Do you need to know how to draw to play it?

No. The principle is based on ink pads (coloured shapes), so no artistic talent is needed. A little logic, creativity and cooperation are all that's required.

Is the game cooperative or competitive?

Cooperative. All players collaborate for a single team (everyone) to succeed together. If too many mistakes are made, it is a collective defeat.

What makes Ink It unique compared to a classic drawing game?

Instead of freehand drawing, ink pads with pre-defined shapes and colors are used. This transforms the game into an original creative challenge, accessible to all and stimulating collective imagination.
