How to play Raiders of the North Sea?

Game Setup

  • Each player receives their clan's starting resources, while the board representing the Viking village and the various raiding areas is set up.
  • Crew cards, provisions, livestock, iron, gold, and Valkyries are set up before the start of the game. Each player has their workers of different colors, which will be used to perform actions in the village.

Gameplay outline

  • In each round, a player always takes two actions.
  • They start by placing a workeron an empty village space to perform an action: recruit a crew member, gain resources, collect provisions, obtain money, or prepare for their future raid.
  • Then, they pick up another worker already presenton a second space to immediately perform a new action. This worker placement and retrieval system is the true hallmark of Raiders of the North Sea and creates a particularly fluid pace.
  • Once your crew is powerful enough, you can go on a raid. The closest expeditions require little preparation, while the more distant fortresses and monasteries demand more strength, provisions, and sometimes specific resources.
  • Each raid brings loot, victory points, and sometimes valuable Valkyries. The latter offer interesting rewards but also require sacrificing some of your crew members, creating a constant balance between immediate gains and preparation for subsequent expeditions.

Win/Loss Condition

  • The game ends when the main pillaging areas have been exhausted.
  • Players then add up the points obtained from their raids, their offerings to the Jarl, their gold, their crew, and various bonuses accumulated during the game.
  • The clan that has acquired the most prestige wins.
  • Prepare your raids several turns in advance

The best looting is often that which was anticipated long before leaving the village.

  • Hire a complementary crew

Some cards become extremely powerful when played together.

  • Don't neglect the Valkyries

Sacrificing a few warriors can open the way to very profitable rewards.
