How to play Katamino?

Game Setup

  • Take out the game board, the sliding ruler, and the 12 wooden pieces(pentominoes).
  • Insert the ruler between two graduations on the board to define the play area (Penta): the wider you make it, the more challenging it will be.
  • Choose a difficulty levelor a challenge card that indicates which pieces to use for that challenge.

Gameplay outline

  • The goal is toperfectly fill the delimited spaceon the board with the given pieces without leaving any empty space.
  • Start with the simplest challenges by placing fewer pieces, then gradually increase the size of thePentato make the combinations more complex.
  • If you are playing with2 players, you can take on the challenges in a duel: each person tries to solve the same challenge or create figures according to the variations proposed in the rules.
  • The game can also be used freely to create shapes, figures or structures with the pentominoes, perfect for developing imagination and observation skills.

Win/Loss Condition

  • In solo mode, victory is achieved as soon as you successfully complete the challengeby filling the defined space with all the pieces, leaving no empty spaces.
  • In two-player duel mode, victory goes to the first player who completes their challenge or fills their space more efficiently according to the chosen variant rules.
  • Katamino does not have a strict notion of "defeat" in the usual sense: if you fail to solve a challenge, you can simply try again with a different strategy or reduce the difficulty.
  • Start with the edges of the Pentagon

To maximize your chances, try placing the pieces along the edges of the board first. This helps you better visualize the remaining placements and reduces the possibility of errors.

  • Work from largest to smallest

First place the largest pentominoes, then adjust the smaller pieces around them. This strategy often simplifies fitting the last gaps.

  • Learn winning configurations

Each challenge potentially has multiple solutions. If you get stuck, remove the pieces and try a new configuration: many solutions start with the same basic arrangement.
