How to play King Of New York?

Game Setup

  • Each player chooses a monster and places their health and victory points on their board.
  • The board is set up with the different districts of New York and the buildings to destroy.
  • Power cards are revealed, and energy cubes are prepared. Monsters are placed in different starting districts around Manhattan.

Gameplay outline

  • In turn, a player rolls the dice up to three times to optimize their results.
  • Symbols allow players to attack, heal, gain energy, or accumulate victory points.
  • Monsters move between districts to avoid danger or seek opportunities.
  • Players can destroy buildings to gain bonuses or attract military attention.
  • Power cards enhance abilities and create varied strategies.

Win/Loss Condition

The game ends as soon as a player reaches 20 victory points or is the last monster alive.

  • Use buildings to speed up your progress

In King of New York, buildings add an extra strategic dimension. Destroying them grants immediate bonuses such as health points, energy, or victory points. It is therefore essential to identify the right moments to attack these buildings rather than opponents, especially early in the game to build a strong advantage.

  • Managing military-related risks

Unlike King of Tokyo, military presence completely changes the pace of the game. "Danger" dice rolls can trigger army attacks, sometimes dealing massive damage. It is therefore crucial to anticipate these risks and avoid staying too long in a dangerous zone, especially if you are already weakened.

  • Getting around smart between neighborhoods

Positioning is much more strategic in this version. Moving allows you to avoid attacks, target specific buildings, or disrupt enemy plans. Good movement management enables you to stay safe while maximizing your scoring opportunities.

FAQ – All about King of New York

What's the difference with King of Tokyo?

King of New York builds on the foundations of King of Tokyo, but adds several mechanics: movement between districts, destruction of buildings, the presence of the army, and a celebrity system. These elements make the game more strategic and interactive, while retaining its fun and accessible nature.

Is the game still a party game?

Yes, King of New York remains an excellent party game, but with a more developed strategic layer. There are more choices and richer interactions, which will appeal to both casual and more experienced players.

Is chance important?

As in King of Tokyo, the dice introduce an element of chance. However, rerolls and tactical choices allow players to partially control the outcomes. The strategy involves adapting to the dice while optimizing one's decisions.

Is the game more complex than King of Tokyo?

Yes, slightly. The new mechanics add depth, especially with district and building management. However, the rules remain accessible and the game is still quick to pick up.
