How to play War of the Ring: The Card Game
Game Setup
Select a scenario from those offered (e.g., The Fellowship of the Ring, from the Shire to Mount Doom, or Duel mode).
Each player chooses a faction: the Free Peoples or the Shadow. Each faction receives a deck of faction cards, plus the Location cards and tokens provided.
Place the Location cards, the "Ring" or "Corruption" token, the turn order track, and the first player markers, according to the rules.
Shuffle your cards and prepare your starting hand according to the scenario rules.
Gameplay outline
Players take turns (according to the determined turn order). In each round, each player plays cards from their hand: characters, armies, items, or events.
Cards are deployed onto the game areas: battlefields or roads. Once the round is over, battles or resolutions are triggered.
Certain effects can activate special actions: reinforcing an army, moving a location, corrupting a character, or controlling a road.
The game continues until one player has 10 more points than their opponent, or until the end of road 9. In the latter case, the player with the most points wins.
Win/Loss Condition
The standard scenario ends when one player has 10 more points than their opponent at the end of a round. Otherwise, at the end of Route 9, the player with the most points wins.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Anticipate turn order to maximize your cards
Keep an eye on turn order and play your key cards at the right time: going first can allow you to deploy a decisive army or interrupt your opponent before they can act. Avoid wasting powerful cards when you play last.
-
Control the roads before engaging in battles
In this game, control zones (roads, battlefields) are crucial: before launching your weapons into a major battle, secure a road or place a key character in a strategic location. This will give you a structural advantage over your opponent.
-
Play event cards at the opportune moment
"Event" or "Special Item" cards can turn the tide of a battle or change the flow of the game. Keep them for a turn where your opponent seems to have the upper hand, to maximize their value and surprise them.
