How to play White Castle DUEL?
Game Setup
- Place the central board representing the court and the influence circles.
- Each player chooses a clan and takes their "Personal Domain" board, clan seals, and "Lamp" tokens.
- Arrange the Influence cards, trade tiles, gardens, training grounds, and other tiles according to the rules.
- Shuffle the Influence cards and place them in a draw pile available for purchase and upgrade.
- Choose who goes first, then you are ready to begin.
Gameplay outline
Each turn consists of several phases:
- The active player uses their Lamp tokens to obtain resources (money, goods) or activate actions.
- With these resources/actions, they can:
Buy or upgrade Influence cards.
Place clan seals on gardens or training grounds.
Move their courtier among the circles of influence to change the turn order or access new actions.
Engage in trade with the Portuguese, in line with the historical theme of Nanban trade. - These actions generate icons and markers: flags, katanas, kabutos, origamis, etc. These symbols are key to obtaining victory points.
- After a series of turns, when an end condition is met (for example, depletion of a resource type or Influence cards), the game ends.
Win/Loss Condition
At the end of the game, players tally their victory points obtained from Influence cards acquired/optimized, clan seals placed, trade resources exploited, and accumulated icons. The player with the most pointswins the game.
In case of a tie, the rules provide a tie-breaker criterion (often turn order or the number of remaining actions): check the complete rules for this specific case.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Claim your Lamp tokens early
From the very first turns, use your Lamp tokens to get resources: don't leave them unused. A quick action will give you a tactical advantage and prevent you from suffering the opponent's initiative.
-
Invest wisely in Influence cards
Influence cards allow you to acquire key icons and generate more resources or actions. Favor those that align well with your strategy (e.g., trade or training grounds), rather than trying to do everything.
-
Do not underestimate trading with the Portuguese
The merchant exchange mechanism is a powerful differentiator. Used well, it provides rare resources or powerful icons. Integrate it into your plan before it is monopolized by the opponent.
