Immerse yourself in a medieval power struggle with The King is Dead, a captivating board game where up to 4 players compete to take control of Great Britain after the king's demise. In this context of political instability, three rival factions — Scots, Welsh, and English — vie for the eight regions of the kingdom, while the French invaders lie in wait for any weakness. Strategy, anticipation, and careful management of your actions are at the heart of each game, offering a gaming experience that is both simple to learn and rich in tactical decisions.

How do you play the game The King Is Dead?
Game Setup
Place the game board representing the disputed regions and the region control markers on it. Shuffle the Action cards and deal 8 cards to each player—this will be your hand for the entire game. Each player starts with zero influence in all factions. All necessary markers (pawns, support cubes, tokens) are placed within reach.
Gameplay outline
The game is played in cycles of turns. On your turn, you can either play an Action card to influence a region or voluntarily pass—a significant strategic decision as it affects your future possibilities. Action cards allow you to move followers, strengthen a faction's influence, or change regional dominance. With each action played, you gain a follower who strengthens your position with the corresponding faction, but sometimes weakens that faction's influence in the targeted region. This subtle hand and influence management mechanic makes every decision a real strategic dilemma, where inaction can be as consequential as action itself.
Win/Loss Condition
Once all regions have been claimed by a faction, the faction with the most territories is determined. This faction wins, and the player with the most influence in that faction is crowned the victor. A clear majority in a powerful faction can overturn a seemingly masterfully executed strategy, making each game unpredictable and strategic until the very end.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Handle your cards with care
You only have 8 cards for the entire game: don't use them too quickly. Waiting for the right moment can be more decisive than acting immediately.
-
Observe the rival factions
Monitor the evolving balance of power: supporting an already dominant faction can be more advantageous than directly opposing your adversaries.
-
Anticipate the effect of your actions
Playing a card increases your influence, but sometimes decreases the strength of the faction in the targeted region: always assess the overall impact before acting.
