Immerse yourself in the intriguing medieval French royal court with Le Roy des Ribauds Duel, a strategic and tense Micro Game for two players where cunning, bluffing, and manipulation are key.
In this duel of political plots, each player attempts to gain the upper hand by manipulating the court characters to achieve one of their secret conspiracies. Compact, quick to play, and surprisingly deep despite its pocket-sized format, this game is perfect for mischievous and strategic one-on-one matches.

How to play The Ruffian King?
Game Setup
Shuffle the 16-card deck consisting of four character types: King, Queen, Knight, and Assassin. Each player receives 3 cards in hand, and a central area called the Court is made up of 4 face-down cards in the center of the table. All cards have a specific effect that can be triggered when revealed or played.
Gameplay outline
On your turn, you have two possible actions:
- Reveal a Court card: Choose a face-down card in the Court, flip it face up, and immediately activate its effect.
- Play a card from your hand: Select a card from your hand to replace a card in the Court. The played card can be placed face up to activate its effect or face down to deceive your opponent. The card replaced in the Court is then added to your visible discard pile.
Each character type has a unique ability that influences drawing, revealing, observing, or manipulating opponent's cards, adding a rich tactical dimension to every decision.
Win/Loss Condition
The game ends immediately when a player achieves one of the three secret conspiracies:
- The Coronation: having 3 King cards revealed in the Court during your turn.
- The Marriage: having 3 Queen cards in your hand at the beginning of your turn.
- The Assassination: two revealed Assassin cards framing another revealed card in the Court during your turn.
The first player to fulfill one of these conditions wins the game, demonstrating both cunning and the ability to anticipate the opponent.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Master bluffing and counter-bluffing
The core of the game revolves around managing face-up and face-down cards: use concealment to surprise your opponent and activate your conspiracies at the ideal moment.
-
Observe the Court closely
Revealing or repositioning cards in the Court can give you valuable insight into what your opponent is trying to accomplish: use them to adjust your strategy.
-
Leverage the character effects
The powers of Kings, Queens, Knights, and Assassins don't just serve your own objectives: they can also thwart opposing plans if used at the opportune moment.
