How to Play Age of Masks?

Game Setup

  • Shuffle the deck of 5-color cards(each color corresponds to a Mask with its own power).
  • Deal each player 2 face-up cardsin front of them — these represent the Masks already acquired in their camp.
  • Deal 2 cards into handto each player.
  • The central draw pile is placed in the center of the table.

Gameplay outline

In turn, you choose one of these two actions:

  • Draw: take 2 cardsfrom the draw pile and add them to your hand. Free action, no risk.
  • Play a Mask: place a card from your hand face downin the center of the table. Your opponent must then decide:

Let Pass: they do not try to guess the color. The card is revealed and joins your side face up; you immediately apply its power.
Counter: they announce a color. If their guess is correct, the card is discarded, the effect is canceled, and the card does not benefit you. If their guess is incorrect, the card still joins your side, and you apply its power, and the opponent has revealed information about how they read your play.

The 5 Mask powerscreate varied effects: some modify hands, others cancel opponent's cards, and still others allow you to look at your opponent's hand or swap cards. These powers lead to constant turnarounds until the last card.

Win/Loss Condition

The first player to collect in front of them either 4 cards of the same color, or 1 card of each of the 5 different colorswins the game and control of Venice.

  • Vary your game patterns to remain unreadable

If you systematically play the same colors in the same order, your opponent will learn to read you. Alternate your colors and your rhythms: sometimes draw when you have a good card to play, sometimes play a "sacrifice" card to test your opponent's reactions.

  • Observe the colours already in the opposing camp

The cards in your opponent's camp are visible. If three red cards have already been played there, countering their next red card is almost a sure bet. Use this visible information to calibrate your counter decisions, never guess blindly.

  • Use defensive powers at the right time

Some Masks allow you to discard opponent's cards or protect your camp.Reserve these powersfor moments when your opponent is about to reach their victory condition: playing them too early is a tactical waste.

FAQ – All About The Age of Masks

Is the game really suitable for ages 8 and up despite the bluffing aspect?

Yes. The rules can be read in 3 minutes and the two victory conditions are immediately understandable. The psychological dimension deepens with experience: the first few games are already very fun even for casual players.

Is it really strategy or just luck?

Luck is present in the draw pile, but the choices of counters, timing, and hand managementare entirely strategic. Players who observe and memorize visible information consistently gain an advantage over those who play randomly.

Are the 5 powers enough to maintain variety in the long term?

Yes, largely. Each power interacts differently depending on the game context and the position of both players. The combination of the 5 effects with the tension of guessinggenerates new situations every game despite the system's conciseness.

Is the game easy to transport?

This is one of its clear strengths. The box is compact and lightweight, ideal for travel, restaurants, or breaks. A 30 cm table is enough to set up the game, and the 15-minute duration suits all contexts.
