How to play Ticket to Ride?

Game Setup

Place the game board, representing a vast railway network (often in the United States in the basic version), in the center of the table. Distribute a color to each player and give them the corresponding train cars and a scoring marker. Shuffle the Train Car cards and Destination Ticket cards, then deal a small number to each player. The visible Train Car cards are placed in a line to be drawn.

Gameplay outline

Players take turns choosing one of three actions:

  1. Draw Train Car cards: Take two cards from those available or from the top of the deck.
  2. Take new Destination Tickets: Choose to add new objectives to your hand, potentially lucrative but risky.
  3. Claim a Route: Discard Train Car cards of the correct color to place your trains on a route between two cities, claiming this connection to score points.

As routes are built, they become permanently controlled by the player who claimed them, thus changing the strategic landscape of the game.

Win/Loss Condition

The game ends when a player places their last trains or when a certain threshold is reached on the score track. Each player adds up their points for:

  • Routes built (the longer they are, the more they are worth),
  • Successfully completed Destination Tickets (when the connected cities are linked by your lines),
  • The longest continuous railway, which offers an additional bonus.

The player with the highest total score wins the game.

  • Plan your routes efficiently

Don't just build randomly: think several turns ahead and look for connections that will earn you the most points while limiting your opponents' opportunities.

  • Balance risk and reward with Destinations

The more ambitious a Destination Ticket is, the more points it can be worth... but beware: if you don't complete it, it will penalize you at the end. Choose them carefully.

  • Control the key routes on the plateau

Some routes between major cities are highly sought after by all players. Securing them early can both block your opponents and ensure a good score.

FAQ – All About Ticket to Ride

What makes Ticket to Ride so successful?

Ticket to Ride combines learn-to-play simplicity with strategic depth, offering fast-paced games rich in tactical decisions, perfect for all skill levels.

Can I play with different geographical maps?

Yes! Beyond the basic version in the United States, there are variations such as Europe, San Francisco or Paris, each offering a slightly different experience.

What's the best strategy for choosing my goals?

Try to select destination tickets with cities that are close to each other or that overlap with other routes you plan to build: this maximizes your points while minimizing the number of trips needed.

How to take advantage of the longest path bonus?

Try to create a continuous chain of routes connecting several nearby cities: even if it doesn't always yield the highest score on its own, this bonus can make a difference at the end of the game.
