2 to 4 players 15 min 8 years and up

Crows, falcons, eagles, and owls soar above the forest. Their constant movement highlights the changing balance of power that determines who truly rules these skies.

Maîtres des Cimes is an 18-card hand management game where 2 to 4 players compete to get the best combination of 6 cards. Each card has a unique scoring rule, with players using both the 3 cards in their hand ("the sky") and one of the shared card reserves in play ("the forest") for the final score. As players draw cards, they fill the forests and shape the skies in their favor to win the game.

This game is part of Matagot's Micro Games collection, from the Button Shy Games catalog: simple, fast, varied, and highly replayable pocket-sized games, for solo, duo, or multi-player play.

How to play The Lords of the Peaks?

Game Setup

Shuffle the 18 cards, then deal the starting cards according to the game rules. Each player has a hand representing their personal sky, while several common cards are placed in the center of the table to form the forest. These two areas will be used for the final score calculation.

Gameplay outline

  • In turn, players draw and manipulate cards to improve their hand and influence the cards in the common forest. The objective is to progressively build the most effective card combination.
  • Each card has its own way of scoring points and can interact differently depending on whether it is in your sky or in the forest. The choices made during the game directly influence the possibilities of other players, creating a permanent balance between personal development and collective game control.
  • As cards circulate, skies transform and opportunities evolve until the final count.

Win/Loss Condition

When all cards have been played or the game reaches its planned end, players calculate their score by taking into account the cards in their hand as well as the selected common cards. The player with the most profitable combination becomes the true master of the peaks.

  • Build your hand around a few strong cards

Since each card has its own scoring logic, it is often more effective to develop a consistent strategy than to pursue every available opportunity.

  • Use the forest to prepare your victory

Community cards are not just for other players. Anticipate their evolution to create favorable situations for your final score.

  • Maintain a flexible strategy

The small number of cards makes every decision important. Stay flexible to modify your plans based on the cards that appear during the game.

FAQ – All About Les Maîtres des Cimes

Why is Masters of the Peaks considered a truly strategic game?

The game relies on hand management, optimizing available cards, and constant interactions between your personal sky and the communal forest.

What makes this microgame different from other card games?

Its dual-scoring-zone system adds an extra tactical layer where players must consider both their own cards and shared cards.

Does the small number of maps limit replayability?

On the contrary, the reduced number of cards reinforces the importance of each decision and renews games through the different possible combinations.

Should we prioritize our sky or the forest?

The balance between the two spaces is often key. Ignoring one of them can severely limit your scoring potential.
