Luz is a very clever trick-taking game where players don't see their own cards, but those of their opponents!
The game takes place over several rounds, each consisting of several tricks. At the beginning of each round, each player must bet on the number of tricks they think they will win, based only on the visible cards of the other players.
A very clever and easy-to-learn deduction game for hours of fun, set in the bright and colorful world of stained glass!

How to play Luz?
Game Setup
- Each player receives a hand of cards, which they first sort by suit and then by ascending order of value. Once the cards are organized, the hands are exchanged between players without revealing their content.
- You therefore receive a hand for which you only know the suits and the relative order of the cards... but never their exact value.
- Before the tricks begin, each player announces the number of tricks they expect to win during the round and can secure their bid with a limited tolerance margin.
Gameplay outline
- In each trick, the first player chooses a card to play without looking at its actual value. The other players must follow suit when they can, as in a traditional trick-taking game.
- The entire subtlety of the game comes from the fact that you must constantly deduce your hand by observing the visible cards of other players and the cards already played. The further the game progresses, the more accurate your understanding of your own hand becomes.
- At the same time, your bid remains at the heart of every decision. Winning too many tricks can sometimes be as penalizing as not winning enough.
Win/Loss Condition
- At the end of each round, players compare the number of tricks actually won with their initial bid.
- Successfully matching your bid earns points, while a discrepancy between forecast and result incurs penalties. As the game progresses, the stakes become higher.
- After the last round, the player with the most points wins the game and becomes the most talented glass master.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Deduct your cards before trying to win tricks
In Luz, knowing your hand approximately is often worth more than an immediate trick. Use the first few turns to gather information.
-
Make careful bets early in the game
Too much optimism can be costly. A slightly conservative bet often allows you to better adjust your strategy during the round.
-
Observe the cards played more than your own suits
The cards visible to other players provide valuable clues about the values you actually hold.
FAQ – All About Luz
How is Luz different from other trick-taking games?
Because players never know the exact value of their own cards and must deduce it throughout the round.
Is betting mandatory?
Yes, each deal starts with a betting phase that directly influences the final score.
Does the game rely more on chance or on deduction?
Deduction and observation are central. The more players progress through the round, the more they refine their understanding of the game.
Can Luz be played like a classic trick-taking game?
The fundamental rules of trick-taking remain present, but the hidden information completely transforms the decision-making process.
