Magic Maze is a real-time cooperative game for 1 to 8 players, designed by Kasper Lapp and published by Sit Down! Four adventurers—a sorceress, a barbarian, an elf, and a dwarf—find themselves without equipment or money and have no choice but to rob the local shopping mall. Each player controls a unique action valid for all heroes, and the group must coordinate without saying a single word, against a 3-minute hourglass. Awarded the Spiel des Jahres in 2017, Magic Maze has become an essential cooperative game classic.

How to play Magic Maze?
Game Setup
- Choose one of the 17 scenariosfrom the booklet and follow its setup instructions.
- Shuffle the 24 Mall tilesface down and place the starting tile in the center.
- Place the 4 Hero pawnson the central spaces of the starting tile.
- Deal the Action tilesaccording to the number of players — each tile indicates one or more exclusive actions: move North, South, East, West, explore a new tile, take an escalator, or pass through a portal.
- Place the "Do Something!" pawn, the 3-minute hourglass, and the Theft tilewithin everyone's reach.
Gameplay outline
- Flip the hourglass: the game begins immediately and simultaneouslyfor all players.
- Each player can move any hero, but only to perform the action indicated on their tile. No other actions are possible.
- Players cannot speak, make suggestive gestures, or point at heroes or spaces. The only permitted signal: place the "Do Something!" tokenin front of a player to indicate that the group needs them.
- Scattered Time spaceson the tiles allow you to flip the hourglass to gain 3 minutes — and briefly catch your breath by communicating freely for a few seconds.
- Heroes must first reach their colored itemin the center, then move to the corresponding exit, all simultaneously to trigger the escape.
Win/Loss Condition
- Collective Victory: all 4 heroes escape the mall at the same time before the hourglass runs out for the last time.
- Collective Defeat: the hourglass runs out without a hero on a Time space or without the escape being triggered. Everyone loses — and you start over immediately.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Memorize your teammates' Action tiles
From the very first seconds, memorize who can do what. Instantly knowing which player can push a hero North or activate a portal avoids wasted seconds scrutinizing tiles—seconds that can cost you the game.
-
Don't hesitate to use the "Do something!" pawn.
Many players hesitate to place this pawn out of politeness or embarrassment. This is a mistake. This pawn is a tactical tool, not a criticism. As soon as a player seems not to have noticed that a hero is waiting for their action, place it without delay.
-
Plan both steps in advance: the object AND the output
The classic mistake is to focus on retrieving the equipment without anticipating the path to the exit. Always think two steps ahead: as soon as a hero touches their item, the race to the exit should already be mentally mapped out.
FAQ – All about Magic Maze
Can we really play with up to 8 players without total chaos?
Yes, and that's one of the game's great strengths. With 8 players, each player only has one or two actions to manage, which makes coordination even more demanding and the moments of deadlock even funnier. The large table experience is different but just as intense.
Are the 17 scenarios truly progressive?
Yes, very well calibrated. The first 7 scenariosintroduce the rules one by one — security cameras, action permutation, special hero abilities. Each scenario adds a layer of complexity without ever abruptly destabilizing the group.
Does Magic Maze work well solo?
Surprisingly well. In solo, you manage all actions alone, which transforms the game into a personal coordination puzzleagainst the clock. It's calmer than multiplayer, but demanding in its own way.
Is communication really forbidden all the time?
No. Speech is permittedonly when a hero is on a Time space— which flips the hourglass. These brief windows of communication are often the funniest and most precious moments of the game.
