How to play Mille Bornes Pocket?
Game Setup
- Shuffle the 110 cards, including 4 reminder cards.
- Deal 7 cards to each player.
- Place the shoe (draw pile) in the center of the table.
- Identify each player's "playing area": spaces for Mile markers, Attack/Remedy, Safety cards, Speed Limit cards…
Gameplay outline
- In turn, a player draws cards until they have 7 cardsin hand.
- They can then play one of several card options:
Mileage Card: to advance (e.g., 25, 50, 75, 100 km…), if conditions allow (a "Go" card is played or an appropriate "Safety" card is present).
Attack Card: to play a "hazard" on an opponent (out of gas, accident, red light, etc.) to slow them down.
Defense Card: to counter an attack with the corresponding remedy card (e.g., "Repairs" for a flat tire).
Safety Card: these immunize certain attacks and provide a bonus (e.g., "Puncture Proof" allows you to play again immediately).
If no card can be played: discard one.
- The turn ends when the player has played (or discarded) a card, and potentially drawn if needed.
Win/Loss Condition
- Objective: be the first to collect exactly 1000 milesin your Mileage pile.
- If you cannot reach exactly 1000 miles (or the draw pile runs out), the player closest to 1000(without exceeding) wins.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Handle your Borne cards with care
Don't always play the largest Milestone as soon as possible: sometimes it's better to advance gradually to keep useful cards to counter attacks.
-
Anticipate adverse attacks
Watch for Attack cards played by your opponents: use your Remedies (or Safety cards) at the right moment to avoid losing time.
-
Enjoy the "Boots"
Trump cards are your allies: they protect against specific attacks, and when you play a Trump card as a “Coup Fourré,” you immediately get to play again—a great opportunity to get ahead.
FAQ – Everything you need to know about Mille Bornes Pocket
What exactly does the Pocket box contain?
110 cards (including 4 memo cards) and the game rules.
What is the difference between classic Mille Bornes and the Pocket version?
The format: the Pocket version is compact, easier to carry, but uses the same cards and the same racing, attack, and defense mechanics.
Is the game strategic or just luck?
There's a good mix: card draws are random, but your choices (when to play a Boundary, when to play a Boot, when to take or prevent an attack) strongly influence the outcome.
From what age can one play?
From 6 years old, thanks to its simple and accessible format.
