How to play Moonshine?

Game Setup

Each player chooses (or receives) a speakeasy: a starting card with unique bonuses if you use the asymmetrical variant.
Set up the elements: the 5 dice, the Moon tokens, the customer deck (cards) and the forbidden resources represented by the icons on the dice.
Deal each player a hand of potential customer cards as well as the ability to use certain dice (basic white + colored dice if activated).

Gameplay outline

Win/Loss Condition

The game ends immediatelyas soon as a player reaches 12 prestige points.
At that point, the player with the highest score wins. There is no “defeat” other than not having optimized one’s engine quickly enough.

  • Optimize your follow-ups to avoid the bottleneck

Don't waste your rerolls on the first turn: aim for dice results that unlock significant bonuses rather than trying everything at once. One well-placed reroll is better than several ineffective ones.

  • Plan your client engine, not just your immediate resources

Recruiting an expensive client might seem tempting, but if they don't immediately unlock a useful bonus, you risk losing momentum. Prioritize clients who provide you with a reroll or an extra die, which will accelerate your overall engine.

  • Don't let randomness block you — use Moon tokens or switch clients

When the dice roll doesn't serve you, don't stand idly by: use the "take a Moon token" or "change client" option to bypass randomness. This maintains your progress and avoids a delay loop.

FAQ – All About Moonshine

Does the theme involve extensive manipulation or illegality?

The theme is clear: during Prohibition, you manage a clandestine speakeasy. The tone is light and stylized, with anthropomorphic animals. This is not a game of extreme delinquency, but rather a chic and competitive "secret bar" atmosphere.

Is it all down to chance, or can we have reliable strategies?

Dice randomness is present but contained: thanks to bonuses, re-rolls, and engine choices, players can guide their path to victory. Winning relies more on good choices than on raw luck.

What equipment does the box contain?

The box contains: 76 cards, 5 dice, 30 tokens (Moon tokens), and rules in French.

Is there an official solo mode for Moonshine?

No, the game is officially designed for 2 to 5 players. Some house rules exist, but no solo mode is officially included.
