Mythologies is a drafting and tableau-building game for 2 to 4 players, designed by Maxime Babad and Mickaël Garcin, and published by Super Meeple. Each player embodies the founder of a nascent civilization and builds their own pantheon by invoking gods, demigods, and legendary creatures from 8 mythologies around the world — Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Hindu, Zulu, and many others. In just 4 rounds and 30 minutes, every card placement presents a dilemma. Crowned at the Cannes Festival 2026, Mythologies has established itself as one of the year's favorites.

How to play Mythologies?
Game Setup
- Draw 4 mythologies out of the 8available. Assemble their boards in a 2x2 grid to form the game's Sanctuary— their orientation determines the two common Trialsfor all players.
- For each mythology, separate the Creature cards(grey back) from the Divinity cards(gold back), and shuffle each deck separately.
- Place 3 Creature cardsface up in front of each Mythology board.
- Distribute to each player their personal pantheon grid(3x3) and their starting resource tokens.
- Designate the first player: setup takes less than two minutes.
Gameplay outline
The game is played over 4 rounds, each consisting of three phases:
- Selection: Each player simultaneously chooses an available card from the Sanctuary and receives a Destiny card— sometimes restrictive — which dictates certain placement choices.
- Placement: Place your card in the pantheon gridof your choice. Location is crucial: each position generates different resources — Gemsor Favor tokens— depending on adjacent cards and the effects of invoked entities. It is possible to cover an already placed cardto trigger powerful combos.
- Maintenance: Activate the persistent powers of your cards, collect your resources, and check your progress towards the Trials.
Win/Loss Condition
Our Tips for Winning
-
Prioritize Favor Tokens over Gems
The classic trap is to get carried away by Gems, which are visually satisfying to collect. But Favor tokens are worth much more: 1 raw point per token, versus 1 point per group of 3 Gems. Keep your eyes on your Favor counter from the very first round.
-
Master the playstyle of your mythology before mixing it
Each pantheon has its own identity: the Norse crush, the Incas sacrifice to get rich, the Chinese trade and manipulate, and the Celts accumulate and protect. Before attempting cross-mythology synergies, make sure you understand the internal motivations of each people you play.
-
Use the Destiny card as a tool, not a constraint
The Destiny cardseems to limit your choices, but it often guides you towards placements you wouldn't have considered spontaneously. Before accepting it, ask yourself if it might not be pushing you towards a stronger combo than your initial plan.
FAQ – All about Mythologies
Is the first part difficult because of reading the icons?
Yes, the first part requires an effort to decipher the icons and powers. This is the only real downside of the game. From the second game onwards, everything becomes fluid and intuitive. The game aidsincluded in the box significantly accelerate this learning curve.
Are the 8 mythologies balanced with each other?
Not quite, and that's intentional. Each mythology has a different level of complexity and interaction, clearly indicated in a table inside the box. The 4 recommended mythologies for the first game are intentionally simpler but less representative of the game's richness. Consult this table to choose according to your preferences from the start.
Is the game really replayable with only 8 mythologies?
Very. The 70 possible starting configurations(4 mythologies out of 8, with different orientations) ensure that the Trials and available synergies change with each game. Expansions are likely to further enrich the base box.
Is Mythologies suitable for casual players, or is it reserved for initiates?
It is aimed at experienced players, but remains accessible from 10 years old. If your group has played a few draft or tableau-building games, they will be comfortable with it by the second game. For very occasional players, plan a guided introductory game.
