Boo is a two-player nanogame in which two clans of ghosts battle to take control of a haunted cemetery. With each card played, you try to reveal as many ghosts of your color as possible while turning over your opponent's. Simple to understand, quick to play, and highly tactical, Boo evokes the efficiency of an abstract majority game in a tiny format. Behind its lighthearted appearance lies a clever duel where placement, lines of sight, and anticipation make all the difference.

How to play Boo Nanogame?

Game Setup

Each player chooses a ghost color and takes the corresponding cards. The cemetery is gradually built in the center of the table, card by card. Players prepare their hand to place their ghosts in the best possible location.

Gameplay outline

  • In turn, a player places a card in the graveyard to expand their influence. The cards allow ghosts to appear and, more importantly, to flip the opponent's ghosts when they are caught from the side or from behind.
  • The direction of the ghosts is essential. A ghost cannot be scared if it sees an attack coming from the front. Therefore, cards must be placed precisely to exploit blind spots, create advantageous reversals, and protect one's own ghosts.
  • As the game progresses, the graveyard becomes increasingly contested. Each placement can change the balance of colors and offer new opportunities to regain control.

Win/Loss Condition

The game ends when the end conditions are met and the graveyard is fully contested. Players then count the visible ghosts of their color. The player with the most revealed ghosts wins the game.

  • Master ghost line-of-sight

At the heart of Boo is the ghost orientation. Before playing a card, always check who can be flipped and which ghosts will remain protected.

  • Attack from the flanks and from the rear

Good placement isn't just about occupying space. Look for blind spots to surprise enemy ghosts without unnecessarily exposing your own.

  • Prepare several chain turnovers

The best moves are often those that suddenly shift the majority in a graveyard zone. Anticipate placements that will allow you to flip multiple ghosts at once.

FAQ – All about Boo

Why is Boo such a tactical two-player nanogame?

Because each card played can change the majority in the discard pile. Placement, orientation, and flips create real strategic choices despite minimalist components.

Does Boo resemble an abstract game?

Yes, Boo has a strong abstract dimension with its majority and ghost-flipping system, while maintaining a fun and immediately understandable theme.

What is the role of ghosting?

Orientation determines whether or not a ghost can be surprised. A ghost attacked from the front remains protected, while a ghost caught from the side or behind can be flipped over.

Can you win without playing aggressively?

Yes, a defensive strategy can work if it allows you to secure your ghosts and prevent the opponent from making big comebacks.
