How to play the Gem Nanogame?

Game Setup

Each player receives their Coin cards, which will be used to participate in auctions. The Gem cards are shuffled and prepared to form the different rounds of the game.

The objective is simple: acquire the most valuable stones while retaining enough resources to remain competitive until the final scoring.

Gameplay outline

  • In each round, several Gem cards are revealed, and players participate in a series of fast-paced auctions. A unique feature of the game is that each auction consists of only one round of bidding.
  • Players announce an amount using their coins or certain gems already acquired to try and obtain the card they are interested in. Each player only has one opportunity to bid before the auction is resolved.
  • It is also possible to pass in order to save resources for subsequent rounds. The whole challenge lies in finding the right balance between investing enough to build your collection and retaining enough value to continue bidding later in the game.

Win/Loss Condition

  • At the end of the game, players count the points obtained from their final gem collection. Gems invested during the game no longer count towards the final score: only retained gems earn points.
  • The player with the most prestigious collection wins the game.
  • Don't try to win every bid

In Gem, trying to win too early can quickly leave you resourceless. Sometimes, accept letting go of certain cards to prepare for a more profitable comeback.

  • Invest your gems wisely

Reusing your stones allows you to access better bids but also reduces your potential final score. Each investment must have a specific objective.

  • Monitor adverse reserves

Observing the resources available to other players helps anticipate the bids they can realistically support and choose the right moment to accelerate.

FAQ – All About Gem

Why is Gem considered a true auction game despite its small size?

The single-round auction system creates immediate decisions where each bid has a significant impact on the rest of the game.

What makes this nanogame different from other collection games?

Resources used for bidding can also contribute to the final score, creating an ongoing dilemma between investing and saving.

Is chance important in Gem?

While gem draws influence available opportunities, managing your bids remains the primary factor for success.

Can we play aggressively?

Yes, but an overly aggressive strategy risks quickly depleting your resources and limiting your options in the final rounds.
