Immerse yourself in Nidavellir, a captivating strategy game where you play as a royal emissary tasked with recruiting the best army of dwarves.

In a world inspired by Norse mythology, you travel through the taverns of the kingdom to hire warriors, miners, hunters, and legendary heroes. Thanks to its original system of secret bidding and coin improvement, each turn requires anticipation and tactical choices. Accessible, fast-paced, and highly replayable, Nidavellir has become a benchmark in modern strategy games.

How to Play Nidavellir

Game Setup

  • Set up the Dwarf and Hero cards based on the edition and number of players.
  • Each player receives an individual player board, a set of gold coins (different values), and a gem (or bounty marker).
  • Place the taverns (recruitment spots) in the center of the table with their corresponding cards.
  • Determine the first player order.

Gameplay outline

  • The game takes place over two Ages. Each Age comprises several rounds.
  • In each round:
Each player secretly places one coin on each tavern to bid.
  • Reveal bids: the highest bid in each tavern gives the right to choose a character.
  • The active player chooses a card (a Dwarf) and adds it to their army. They can also exchange or upgrade their coins via the "coin building" mechanism.
  • Once all taverns have been resolved, the game moves to the next round.

Win/Loss Condition

  • At the end of the Second Age, each player's "Bravery Value" is tallied.
  • The player with the highest value wins: they are designated leader of the army to confront Fafnir.
  • In case of a lower score: you have failed in your royal mission.
  • Watch opponents and react

Monitor other players' boards: if they invest heavily in a class or tavern, adapt your strategy to limit their gains or take advantage of an abandoned location.

  • Mastering the coin-building mechanism

Clever use of the "0" chip allows you to exchange or increase your remaining chips: this tactic can give you a decisive advantage in future auctions.

  • Exploiting Dwarf classes and combinations

Each class (blacksmith, hunter, warrior, explorer, miner) has a specific calculation method. Focus on one or two classes to optimize your score or aim to fill a complete rank to unlock a hero.

FAQ – All about Nidavellir

Does it have any extensions or variations to be aware of?

Yes. Extensions such as "Thingvellir" or "Idavoll" add extra content and vary the possible strategies.

Which strategy should I choose to get started?

For your first games, focus on balanced recruitment in just two classes, rather than trying to cover everything. This simplifies your choices and allows you to familiarize yourself with the bidding and "coin-building" mechanics.

Is player interaction important?

Yes, the bidding phase is central and depends heavily on opponents' bids. Your choices are influenced by what they do and vice-versa: reacting to their tactics is key.

Is the game suitable for 2 players?

It works with 2 players, but some feedback indicates that the experience is less intense than with 4 or 5 players, where interaction is richer.
