Onitama is a refined and subtle two-player confrontation game. Each player has an emperor and four monks, arranged on a small grid mat. The goal of the game is to capture the opponent's emperor, or to move your own emperor to the opponent's temple. On your turn, move one of your pieces using one of your two cards embodying an animal. Once the card is used, it will be retrieved by the opponent at the end of their turn, and so on. So be careful about the cards you give to your opponent!

How to play Onitama?
Game Setup
- Each player receives five pieces: a master placed in the center of their starting line and four disciples who accompany them. Five movement cards are drawn randomly from the game's deck: two for each player and a fifth placed in the center, which will be used for rotation during the game.
- The board is intentionally compact to encourage fast and intense confrontations.
Gameplay outline
- In turn, a player chooses one of their two movement cards, then moves one of their pieces according to the indicated pattern.
- Once the move is made, the used card is placed in the center and replaced by the available card. This system creates a remarkable mechanic: every move you use today will potentially be available to your opponent on the next turn.
- Moves are fully visible to both players. All information is open, which transforms each game into a duel of anticipation where you have to think several moves ahead.
- The small board naturally speeds up confrontations and encourages offensive decisions without waiting too long.
Win/Loss Condition
- There are two ways to win in Onitama.
- The first is to capture the opponent's Master.
- The second, called the Way of the Stream, is to move your own Master to the enemy Master's starting space.
- The game ends immediately as soon as one of these conditions is met.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Always think about the card you're going to offer
The move you use becomes available to your opponent. Before each action, ask yourself if you genuinely want to give them this opportunity.
-
Control the center of the board
Occupying the central squares offers more movement options and reduces opportunities for circumvention.
-
Threaten both win conditions
A player focused solely on capturing often forgets that a master can also win by reaching the opponent's temple.
FAQ – All about Onitama
Why is Onitama often compared to chess?
As in chess, all information is visible and every decision relies on anticipation. But the movement cards make each game different.
Do cards make the game random?
No, only the starting hands change. Once the game has started, all movements are visible and controllable.
Is a game really quick?
Yes, the small board size and direct objectives generally lead to very dynamic confrontations.
Do you have to like chess to enjoy Onitama?
Not at all. The rules are more accessible, and the cards greatly simplify getting started.
