How to play the Onitama Light & Shadow expansion?
Game Setup
- Light & Shadow adds new Ninja miniatures as well as an unprecedented gameplay system. Depending on the mode chosen, each player receives a secret ninja, or one participant takes on an asymmetric role entirely focused on hidden movements.
- Two main variants are available to refresh the confrontations.
Gameplay outline
- The expansion offers two ways to play.
- In Way of the Shadow, both players each have a ninja hidden behind their screen. Unlike other visible units, this character operates in the shadows, and their position remains secret until the opportune moment.
- In Way of the Light, the game becomes asymmetrical: one player keeps the classic Onitama rules while their opponent exclusively controls invisible ninjas capable of striking from unknown positions.
- Onitama's iconic movement cards remain at the heart of the system, but hidden information completely changes how you anticipate your opponent's actions.
- Every move can now conceal a threat and force much more complex defensive choices.
Win/Loss Condition
- Onitama's traditional victory conditions remain active: capture the opponent's master or reach their temple.
- The addition of ninjas, however, changes how this can be achieved, as secret movements create more opportunities for surprise and outmaneuvering.
