Pagan: Fate of Roanoke is an asymmetrical deduction board game for 2 players, designed by Kasper Kjær Christiansen and Kåre Werner Storgaard. The action takes place in 16th century colonial America, where a witch attempts to carry out a powerful ritual while a witch hunter investigates to uncover her secret identity.

Each player has a 50-card deck and multiple resources to achieve their objective. The duel is played with a subtle balance between bluffing, strategy, and action management, offering an intense and immersive experience.

The world of the lost Roanoke colony comes to life thanks to Maren Gutt's illustrations, which enhance the mysterious and oppressive atmosphere of this confrontation. Pagan: Fate of Roanoke is ideal for fans of two-player games, deduction, and tactical showdowns.

How to play Pagan?

Game Setup

  • Each player chooses their side: the Witch or the Hunter.
  • The nine villagers are placed in the center of the table and the identity of the true Witch is secretly determined at the beginning of the game. Each player collects their own deck of cards, their resources, and their personal board. The two sides have entirely different cards and abilities, creating true asymmetry from the setup.

Gameplay outline

  • In each turn, players alternate their actions to influence the villagers.
  • The Witch seeks to discreetly spread her Secrets among the villagers to gain their Favor and complete her ritual. She uses enchantments, potions, familiars, and various manipulation effects to cover her tracks and slow down her opponent.
  • The Hunter, on the other hand, collects Clues, gathers Evidence, and progressively questions the inhabitants to identify the true Witch. He can recruit allies, set up different investigation sites, and exert constant pressure on the village.
  • The game's richness comes from the constant interaction between these two objectives. The Witch must appear discreet enough not to be unmasked while progressing fast enough to complete her ritual. The Hunter, meanwhile, must avoid hasty accusations, at the risk of condemning innocent people and definitively losing the village's trust.

Win/Loss Condition

  • The Witch immediately wins the game when she accumulates enough Favor to complete her ritual on her true identity.
  • The Hunter wins if he definitively discovers which villager is the Witch and correctly accuses them before the ritual ends.
  • However, if he accuses several innocent people, the population eventually turns against him and automatically grants victory to the Witch.
  • Never reveal your strategy too soon

The Witch must constantly sow doubt among several suspects to complicate the Hunter's work.

  • Unleash the power of your deck

Each role has its own cards and synergies. Learning to master them is essential.

  • Always keep several options open

The Hunter progresses more efficiently when gradually eliminating suspects rather than immediately focusing on a single villager.
